Extensive chestnut and oak forests surround La Chapelle-Aubareil. Historical highlights include church and manor-house architecture, archaeological finds and smaller traces of everyday life. If you are looking for a hotel or other accommodation, these different features can help you choose where to stay: would you rather focus on architectural history, trails through the landscape or a specific local offering?

Heritage Through the Ages

The Church of Saint-Loup was built in the 17th century. Its doors are decorated with Maltese crosses and rosettes; the choir faces away from the sunrise. The construction period, door decorations and orientation therefore offer three distinct features by which to identify the building.

The Manoir de l’Air, also known as the Manoir de Lher, dates from the 18th and 19th centuries and consists of two sections arranged at right angles to each other. The Repaire du Bareil has been known since the 13th century; of its ruins, only a 15th-century tower remains. The dates answer different questions here: for the Repaire, its historical significance and the age of the surviving tower should be distinguished.

Roman coins dating from 69 to 269 AD were discovered archaeologically at La Sagne. There are at least 13 old wells in La Chapelle-Aubareil. The area also has the washhouses of Les Moussaries and La Peyre, as well as the washhouse at the pumping station; they are reminders of everyday life in times past. These finds and places of daily life complement the buildings with further historical points of reference.

Choose Trails by Landscape

The Boucle de l’Albaroise is 10 km long and passes through a woodland with a pond, forests and valleys. The Boucle de la Turançonnaise offers views of the Manoir de l’Air. Marked trails provide panoramic views across the Vézère Valley. The two loops differ in their described focus: the Albaroise emphasizes distance and landscape, while the Turançonnaise focuses on views of a building.

Workshops and Local Products

Les Tambours de Jadhyane offers workshops in La Chapelle-Aubareil where you can make your own drums. There are also workshops introducing and developing drumming skills, as well as drum and trance workshops. The program ranges from introductory to advanced practice; making your own drum is a distinct focus. If you would like to take part, check booking and seasonal availability before your trip.

Foie Gras Mercier operates a boutique in La Chapelle-Aubareil selling foie gras, regional products, beer and walnut oil. Check opening arrangements before visiting. The local offerings therefore serve different purposes: drum workshops on the one hand, and products to buy on the other.
