Paunat combines trails through the surrounding area with direct access to the Dordogne and a clearly identifiable cultural focal point: the Église Saint-Martial is the surviving remnant of an important Benedictine abbey. The walking trails also differ in terms of length, duration and difficulty. Seasonal events provide a range of reasons to visit.

Walking trails and routes between villages

The Boucle des Bertrandoux is an easy 7.6-kilometre circular trail; the approximate duration is two hours. The Boucle des Montoises is a 10-kilometre route of moderate difficulty and takes about three hours. The two routes therefore differ in both the time required and their stated difficulty level. Duration estimates are approximate. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

The Boucle des Bénédictins starts and ends in the centre of Paunat. In addition, routes around Paunat connect the surrounding villages and can be travelled on foot or by mountain bike. Alongside the named circular trails, you can also choose routes between villages.

Access to the Dordogne and fishing

At Bac de Sors, Paunat has direct access to the Dordogne. There is no beach, and swimming is not permitted. Check local conditions and rules before visiting. Trout fishing is permitted in three first-category streams: Le Paunat and Le Pradelle flow through the commune, while La Rèze borders it. Check local rules before fishing.

Abbey church and garden culture

The Église Saint-Martial is the surviving remnant of an important Benedictine abbey. Paunat Abbey Church is described as one of the oldest abbey churches in the Périgord; its imposing bell-tower porch is 25 metres high. The church was partially classified as a Monument historique on 9 July 1956, and its surroundings were partially listed as a Monument historique on 12 March 1959.

The Jardins de la Chartreuse du Colombier offer a different focus: their features include Baroque pavilions, dovecotes, varied plantings, old roses and peonies, as well as a vegetable garden in the Florentine style. The gardens have been awarded the “Jardin remarquable” designation.

Events throughout the year

The Montées Paunatoises is an annual outdoor event held in early May. Amateur athletes explore Paunat on foot or by bicycle. The Musique en Sol festival features four concerts in the first half of August at Paunat Abbey Church. Gourmet markets featuring local producers from the region are also held every summer. The events have different focuses—exercise, music and regional produce. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the specific dates in advance.
