Saint-Paul-la-Roche combines a green landscape shaped by three valleys with buildings and traditions from different periods. Visitors can choose from a range of activities: walks, architectural history, and experiences that explore the area through games or animal husbandry. Depending on what you want to focus on during your visit, different aspects of the town come to the fore.

Landscape and walking

The landscape around Saint-Paul-la-Roche is characterised by pastures, cultivated land and woodland. It is shaped by the valleys of the Isle, the Valouze and the Rochille. These three valleys define the green surroundings.

The Eiffel Bridge stands at the confluence of the Valouze and the Isle. It is the starting point for a 4 km walk.

Another option is the short PDIPR walk, Boucle de la Pierre à Cupules. It offers a way to explore Saint-Paul-la-Roche and its landscape and has been officially approved by the Fédération Française de Randonnée. Check the route conditions before setting out on the Boucle.

Traces of different periods

The present-day church of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul was renovated from 1859 to 1861. From 1865, its bell tower was raised by 5.5 m and topped with a 12 m spire. The dates mark two separate phases of construction: the renovation of the church and the later work on the tower.

The washhouse of Saint-Paul-la-Roche dates from the 1960s and was built to make the washerwomen’s work easier. It was also known as the “Parloir des femmes” and the “Hôtel des bavardages”. Alongside the church’s architectural history, the washhouse tells of a place dedicated to a specific everyday task; its two names add a local history of naming to this perspective.

The Maison templière is a surviving medieval commandery, remodelled in the 16th century. The history of the motte at Le Chalard calls for more cautious wording: it is said to have supported a castle that controlled the lordship’s territory and was destroyed during the Hundred Years’ War. A surviving building and an explicitly tentative castle attribution thus stand side by side.

The Sainte Catherine Oratory is also among the area’s religious landmarks. Veneration there dates back to the time of the Templars.

A trail and a farm visit

The free, self-guided family trail “Pépit’o la pépite” explores Saint-Paul-la-Roche through games and puzzles. Visitors discover the area by completing activities, making the trail a different way to explore it from the walks and historic buildings.

Visits to the Ferme du Domaine de Montardy are available by reservation. Visitors can see how Wendy and Laurent care for their free-range pigs, rabbits and sheep. Plan your farm visit with the required reservation and check availability in advance.
