For a stay that combines history with outdoor activities, Mauzens-Et-Miremont offers several distinct points of interest: the ruins of the Château de Miremont, the Church of Saint Martin and two circular trails. A guided tour of around one hour exploring the development of feudal castle architecture adds a cultural dimension. You can decide in advance whether to focus on architectural history or hiking.

Architectural history in the church and castle

The Church of Saint Martin was built in several phases from the late 11th to the 15th century. A stained-glass window depicts Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a poor man.

The ruins of the Château de Miremont have been listed as a Monument historique since 18 May 1971. The Forteresse de Miremont offers a guided tour of around one hour, covering the development of feudal castle architecture from the 12th to the 20th century. The tour is available seasonally or by reservation; check whether it is offered on your dates before making plans.

The church and the tour offer different perspectives: Saint Martin illustrates the building phases of a particular church, while the tour traces the development of feudal castle architecture. You can choose between the history of a single religious building and a broader architectural theme spanning a longer period.

River and circular trails

The Manaurie runs through Mauzens-Et-Miremont from north to south and is a small tributary of the Vézère.

For hiking, choose between the Boucle de Combejadouille No. 27 and the Boucle de Miremont No. 28, which are similar in length and duration. The former is 7.8 km long and takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes; it is marked locally with yellow waymarks. Route No. 28 is 7.7 km long and takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. It descends from the heights of Miremont to the village of Mauzens and passes near the former entrance to a quarry. The two routes are very similar in distance and duration. Before setting out, check the official route page and local conditions, as distances, times and markings may change.

For planning purposes, the more noticeable difference is between a hike and a guided tour: the tour takes about an hour, while each circular trail takes well over two and a half hours. If you are choosing based on the duration of a single activity, the tour is the shorter option.

Crafts and stargazing

Local activities also include craft production. Salsa Maroquinerie makes bags, belts and smaller leather goods, sometimes combining different leatherworking techniques. This offers a different perspective on the area from its buildings and trails: here, the focus is on the material and how it is worked.

Mauzens-Et-Miremont also has a telescope used for evening stargazing. If you would like to include this in your plans, check locally for dates and public access before counting on it as a scheduled activity.
