The Bandiat flows through Abjat-sur-Bandiat between rocks, cascades and weirs. Granite bedrock and oak and chestnut forests complete the landscape; the commune lies in the heart of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park. For your trip planning, the landscape and local heritage offer distinct areas of interest: walking routes with different time estimates, as well as places of historical and cultural significance. You can first choose a route based on the time you have available, then decide which cultural themes you would like to explore.

River and Landscape

The Bandiat is a notable natural feature of the area: it flows through the commune, past rocks, cascades and weirs. The granite bedrock and the oak and chestnut forests are also among the landscape features described. Fishing is also possible in the Bandiat; local fishing regulations may apply. If you are interested, take these regulations into account when planning.

Walking Routes by Time Available

Routes No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 all start at the Syndicat d’Initiative, but differ considerably in distance and duration. Route No. 1 is 6 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Route No. 2 crosses the Bandiat, covers 10 kilometres and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. The second route is therefore longer and takes more time than Route No. 1; crossing the river is another specific point of difference.

Route No. 5, “La Grande Verte”, also starts at the Syndicat d’Initiative. At 26 kilometres, it is the longest of the three routes; the duration is about 6 hours and 30 minutes. The estimated times therefore range from about an hour and a half, through two and a half hours, to a considerably longer walk. This comparison can help you decide how much time to set aside for a route. As route details may change, check the latest information before setting out.

Local History and Cultural Heritage

The Église Saint-André was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 27 January 1994. The commune is also home to historic fountains, springs and washhouses. The Rocher druidique is considered a testament to the commune’s most distant past and is described as a monument that was probably used for ritual purposes. Its possible ritual function is explicitly a supposition.

The bilingual walking tour “L’istòria e sos ressons d’Ajac de Bandiat” explores the history and local heritage of Abjat-sur-Bandiat in Occitan and French. If these subjects interest you, the tour offers a distinct way to discover them alongside visits to individual historic sites. The Jardin des Légendes, in turn, invites you to take an unusual walk through the landscaped village centre.

More Things to Discover

For arts and crafts, Rudy Sculpteur in Chachat is an option as a studio and exhibition space. The 2020 edition of a Regional Natural Park arts and crafts guide lists studio visits, sales, exhibitions, demonstrations, classes and workshops there, all by prior arrangement. Arrange your visit in advance and check current appointment availability.

In the village centre, L’Insolite is a crêperie. Check the opening hours before visiting. This lets you weigh up the different options separately when planning your trip: a walking route that fits your available time, a look at local history or a visit for which an appointment is important.
