Le Fleix lies on the right bank of the Dordogne and offers a tangible starting point for exploring the town’s history: the Peace of Le Fleix was concluded in 1580 at Château Vieux. Other highlights include the surviving part of Château du Fleix, historic crafts, vineyards on sunny slopes and walking opportunities. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the historical dates and the different details given about the trails.

From the hillside to the Dordogne

The municipality of Le Fleix covers 18.1 km², from the hillside to the right bank of the Dordogne. Both the hillside and the riverside are therefore part of the description of the municipal area. Vinegrowing has long played an important role on Le Fleix’s sunny slopes. The landscape and agriculture thus offer two closely connected perspectives on the town.

Historic traces at the château

The Peace of Le Fleix brought the Seventh War of Religion to an end and was concluded in 1580 at Château Vieux. The date identifies when and where the peace was concluded; it is a specific point of reference in Le Fleix’s history.

The Temple protestant is located in the surviving part of Château du Fleix. By decree dated 8 February 1968, it was listed as a historic monument. The two dates have different meanings: 1580 marks the conclusion of the peace, while 8 February 1968 is the date of the decree listing the temple.

Harbour district, clay and wine

Three large iron cannons can be seen in the former harbour district. Sixteen information panels have been installed at the Port of Le Fleix. The cannons and panels are two specific features connected with local history; each is associated with a different place name.

Clayworking has also shaped the town’s history. From antiquity to the 19th century, the clays of Le Fleix enabled the development of pottery, brickmaking and faience production. This period spans many centuries, and the three crafts mentioned show that the tradition was not limited to a single type of clayworking.

Alongside its importance to the sunny slopes, wine is also associated with the Cave du Fleix, which vinifies and markets wines from the Bergerac and Bordeaux appellations. Product availability may change.

Compare walking trails by duration and distance

A duration is given for the Boucle de Cap de Fer: it is described as a two-and-a-half-hour walk. The Boucle de Gabastou, by contrast, is a 9.9 km circular trail. These details answer different planning questions: for the first route, the focus is on the time required; for the second, on the distance and circular route format. When comparing the two, you are comparing a duration with a distance, not two equivalent measurements.

Every Tuesday at 2:15 p.m., a group from Le Fleix meets in the town hall square to walk in the surrounding area. If you would like to plan your visit around this gathering, check the date in advance. Walking maps for the trails are available from the Le Relais de La Poste tobacconist opposite the town hall; retail availability may change.
