The rocky promontory of Beynac-Et-Cazenac above the Dordogne was already inhabited in the Late Bronze Age and served as a defensive structure and lookout point. Today, the Château, churches, medieval lanes and river activities offer different ways to plan your stay. Beynac-Et-Cazenac is one of the “Plus Beaux Villages de France”. If you’re weighing up visits and activities, you can choose between a short climb, a river cruise and a longer canoe trip.

Château and churches: history in specific places

The Château de Beynac, including its surrounding walls and terraces, was classified as a historic monument by decree on 11 February 1944. The history of the site can also be seen in the other buildings in the village: Notre Dame de l’Assomption was built within the first enclosure of the Château on a rectangular ground plan in the 12th and 13th centuries. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1912.

The Église de Cazenac is a Romanesque church with a flat-ended choir, transept, masonry tower with two openings and a moulded round-arched portal. The church of Saint-Martial in Cazenac was built in the 12th and 15th centuries and listed as a historic monument in 1948. The Tour du Couvent is a former knight’s tower in front of the remains of a monastery founded by Augustinian monks. The Porte Veuve was the last gate separating the village centre from the Château. Together, these buildings offer different points of reference for distinguishing between sacred architecture, fortifications and local history.

Lanes and climb: plan your visits

A guided tour of the village leads from the banks of the Dordogne through the medieval lanes to the Château. It explains how the village was organised to defend its Château. Availability of this tour may vary by season. The Château also offers self-guided visits with explanatory panels and a guide accessible by mobile phone. This visit format may change; check the latest information before planning your itinerary.

From the lower village, the walk up to the Château takes about 15 minutes. Allow time for this walk as a separate part of your itinerary if you’d like to combine a visit to the castle with other stops. Access information may change if paths or parking arrangements are altered; check in advance if necessary.

On the Dordogne: cruise or canoe trip

Gabarres de Beynac offers a narrated 50-minute cruise on the Dordogne departing from Beynac. Boarding is at the foot of the Beynac car park, opposite the post office. Operating hours may vary seasonally, and boarding arrangements may change. Check the schedule and boarding details in advance.

The canoe route from Vitrac to Beynac covers 15 kilometres, takes about two and a half hours plus stops, and ends in the centre of Beynac. In terms of time, you can choose between a narrated 50-minute cruise and a canoe trip of around two and a half hours plus breaks. The route and operating conditions may change; check the latest information before setting off. Montgolfière et Châteaux also offers hot-air balloon flights over the Château de Beynac.

Riverside path and practical information

The Promenade des Artistes follows the Dordogne for 300 metres. At 13 information panels, you can learn how Beynac-Et-Cazenac has inspired artists. This short walk connects the river with a specific theme from local history, without requiring a longer excursion.

The Beynac tourist information office is at the foot of the Château de Beynac. It offers maps, ideas for visits and information about gabarre cruises on the Dordogne. Its location and services may change; check the latest information if necessary. This lets you choose visits and river activities based on the time available, rather than trying to fit every stop into a single visit.
