The Gavaudun Valley is defined by steep cliffs and wooded slopes; the Lède has shaped the valley. Caves, natural shelters, mills and forges add to the landscape. With the circular “Gavaudun, le chemin des moulins” trail, Château de Gavaudun and the natural areas, there are several distinct highlights to choose from. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on the landscape, the mill trail, architecture or an activity in the valley.
Natural Environment and Wildlife
The Gavaudun Valley has been classified in its entirety as a natural site since 1999. In addition, the Zone Naturelle d’Intérêt Écologique, Faunistique et Floristique (ZNIEFF) extends from Gavaudun to Saint-Avit. Bat populations live in this zone; peregrine falcons and European eagle-owls nest in the cliffs. To understand the geographical boundaries, consider the terms separately: the classification applies to the entire valley, while the ZNIEFF extends from Gavaudun to Saint-Avit. This places the natural site at the landscape scale alongside specific information about habitats. The cliffs bring the landscape and wildlife together in a particularly clear way: they are part of the described valley scenery and also nesting sites for the two birds of prey.
The Mill Trail Along the Lède
The circular “Gavaudun, le chemin des moulins” trail passes six visible mills along the Lède. Its theme is therefore concretely reflected in the route: the mills are not merely part of the valley scenery but are located along the named circular trail. The route guide, updated on 27 November 2024, gives a length of 9.8 km and lists the walk as taking two and a half hours. Distance and duration answer different planning questions: the kilometres describe the route length, while the two and a half hours indicate the walking time given in the route guide. Together, these figures provide a concrete basis for planning your time. Check the route information before setting off, as access conditions may change.
Château de Gavaudun
Château de Gavaudun adds an architectural highlight: its keep has six storeys. Unlike the mill trail, the focus here is a single building rather than a walking route. The château can be visited independently on a self-guided tour. Check the opening hours in advance, as schedules may change. The château therefore offers a different kind of visit from the mill trail: here, a self-guided visit is possible, while the trail is a hike with a stated route and duration.
Activities in the Valley
The LCS Nature Evasion association offers climbing, caving and abseiling in the Gavaudun Valley, as well as canoeing, archery, ziplining and suspended adventure courses. When planning, consider which of these different types of activity interests you and whether it is available on your travel dates. The association is open year-round; check the dates and availability of individual activities in advance.
