Fleurac offers hiking trails with named starting points, panoramic views across the valleys and several historical landmarks. Visitors choosing the town for a stay can explore nature and cultural history as distinct themes. The hiking trails stand out for their starting points and a specific stream crossing; the historical themes range from local and church history to the châteaux and the Grotte de Rouffignac.

Hiking trails with specific starting points

The Boucle de Lalande starts at the Place de Fleurac car park; the Boucle de la Boissonnie starts at the Place du Monument aux Morts in Fleurac. These different starting points provide a clear basis for choosing a route: for Lalande, the car park is the starting point; for the Boissonnie, it is the square by the monument. The Boucle de la Boissonnie also crosses the small Navarre stream. To distinguish the two trails by local features, you can therefore consider both their respective starting points and this stream crossing. If you drive to a starting point, check the parking conditions on site.

Panoramic views and water in the landscape

Fleurac is situated above the surrounding valleys and offers panoramic views. Several streams also flow through the municipality; springs and a fountain add to the variety of its natural landscape. Broad views and water features are thus distinct aspects of the area. The Navarre, a small stream, is a specific example of how a watercourse also features on one of the named hiking routes.

Grotte de Rouffignac and prehistoric art

At the Grotte de Rouffignac, the cave entrance and visitor facilities should be distinguished: only the entrance is in the municipality of Fleurac; the visitor facilities are outside it. The cave is classified as a historic monument under the name “Cro de Granvlle”. In the surrounding area, you can visit the cave by electric train and discover prehistoric art. More than 250 animal depictions, dating back 17,000 years, bring this prehistoric heritage to life. If you plan to visit the cave, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

Church and châteaux: different historical periods

Fleurac is first mentioned in writing in the 13th century. The oldest foundation walls of the church are thought to date back to the 12th century. These are two distinct historical reference points: the town’s first written mention and the presumed dating of the oldest church foundations. The church’s patron saint is Saint Vincent the Martyr, and its dedication is the Assumption of Mary. It is therefore dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven; this dedication should be distinguished from its patron saint, Vincent.

The châteaux also have their own family histories. The Château de Fleurac has been associated with the de Saint-Exupéry family since the 17th century; it remained in the possession of the de-Beauroyre family until 1884. The family associated with the Château de Malbec is first mentioned in the departmental archives in 1509. This family bore the names Seigneur-de-Malbec, de Pech-Alvet, de Fleurac, de la Grange and Lapeyrière. The 1509 archival reference therefore concerns a family associated with the Château de Malbec; the first written mention of Fleurac itself is a separate historical reference point.
