Zimmersheim offers two distinct ways to choose how to spend your stay: architectural and settlement remains, and marked walking trails through a rural landscape. Its history stretches from prehistoric sites to buildings with specific dates. The area also features farmland, orchards, wooded areas and hedgerows, as well as a diverse birdlife. You can therefore focus your time in the village on cultural history or on trails and landscape.

Architectural history in the village

The Église paroissiale de l’Assomption preserves the two lower stories of its former choir tower, which bears the date 1487. Reconstruction of the nave began in 1786. This brings two distinct points in the building’s history into focus: 1487 belongs to the former choir tower, while 1786 marks the start of work on the nave. Those interested in churches and their architectural history will find both a dated section of the tower and a specific date for the reconstruction.

The Maison de Vigneron at 1 place du Général de Gaulle offers a different architectural highlight. Its ground floor is made of stone, while the upper floor is timber-framed. Comparing the two floors makes the different construction methods tangible in a single house. The farmhouse at 1 rue de l’École, with a former plaster mill, is also part of the area’s architectural history. Together, these illustrate different aspects of the built heritage: a house’s construction and a farm’s former use.

Traces of earlier settlement

The Hausleplatz site is associated with settlement by farmers in the Early Neolithic. The hills around Zimmersheim also preserve traces of settlement by Upper Paleolithic hunters, including a hearth at “Lotissement Clauser II.” These clues point to different periods and ways of life: on the one hand, the farming settlement associated with Hausleplatz; on the other, traces of Upper Paleolithic hunters.

A Carolingian necropolis at Bifang is located at the entrance to the “Les verts coteaux” housing development. A Roman road between Bruebach and Rixheim also runs through Zimmersheim. The two details are at different scales: the necropolis is located at a specific point, while the Roman road describes a connection between two named places. Together with the prehistoric sites, they span a broad period without conflating the individual locations or their respective traces.

Walking trails and rural landscape

Zimmersheim has numerous marked walking trails through a landscape of farmland, orchards, wooded areas and hedgerows. The trails offer a distinct way to include the village’s rural character in your stay. The landscape provides a habitat for a diverse birdlife and adds a natural dimension to the historical themes. Cultural history, landscape and outdoor activity are therefore different priorities to weigh up when deciding whether to visit.

One specific activity is the “Marche d’orientation de nuit,” a night orienteering event in Zimmersheim. It offers several routes from 3 to 8 km. Check the event date and reservation requirements before your trip. After the orienteering event, lentil soup with sausage or vegetable soup with sausage may be available by reservation. Check availability and reservation details in advance; the dishes are tied to the event and reservation.
