Jebsheim brings remembrance and landscape together in a tangible way: at the Croix du Moulin, the focus is on remembering the winter of 1945, while the Sentier de la Paix is a 7 km route through Riedwihr, across fields and alongside waterways. Cultural discoveries and a walk through the landscape thus offer different focal points for a stay.

Remembrance at the Croix du Moulin

The Croix du Moulin memorial was inaugurated in 1988 at the site of the mill belonging to the de Berckheim family. It commemorates all those killed and wounded in the winter of 1945. The cross, made up of three parts of Vosges sandstone, represents France, the United States and Germany. The grounds also include a memorial garden where the ashes of veterans rest. The memorial thus combines the three-part symbol with a garden that is also part of the remembrance.

Saint-Martin: a church with a long history

The Saint-Martin church offers a different historical perspective. It is first documented in the year 891; this date marks the first recorded mention, not a designated construction date. The church was partially rebuilt between 1954 and 1957. On 19 February 1996, the parts dating from before the 20th century, as well as the stained-glass windows and the remains of the tower windows, were added to the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. With its architectural and heritage history, Saint-Martin offers a different focus from the Croix du Moulin, which is dedicated to remembering those killed and wounded in the winter of 1945.

Walking the Sentier de la Paix

The Sentier de la Paix starts at the Croix du Moulin memorial, 1 km west of the village of Jebsheim, and leads to the Blind bridge. Along its 7 km length, it passes through Riedwihr, across fields and alongside waterways. Walkers can discover the local flora and fauna along the way. Starting at the memorial site connects the historic dimension with the route; along the way, the landscape, with its waterways and flora and fauna, comes into focus. The trail is therefore more than a single historic point of reference: its route passes through varied landscapes and ends at the bridge.

Cycling and festival dates

There are also six cycling routes for exploring the region. They offer a different scale from the Sentier de la Paix: whereas the latter is a single, 7 km route with a named start and finish, cycling offers a choice of routes geared towards exploring the region. This lets you choose between a clearly defined walking trail and exploring the region by bike.

The FĂŞte du lait began in 1989; its 32nd edition took place in 2022. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the latest dates in advance.
