A local circular trail and other hiking options give Bitschwiller-Lès-Thann a range of hiking experiences. The “Circuit des 2 Vallons” is about 4.5 km long and connects the path along the Kerlenbach with the path along the Allenbourn. It was created with support from the Club Vosgien de Thann. Its starting point is in a car park near the large bend in Rue Joffre, beyond the small bridge over the Kerlenbach. This gives you a clearly identified starting point for the loop.
Hiking trails: a short loop and a longer hike
If you are planning a longer route, Bitschwiller-Lès-Thann offers the “À la rencontre des chamois” hike: it covers 13.5 km and includes 564 m of ascent. Compared with the approximately 4.5 km Circuit des 2 Vallons, it is considerably longer; the elevation gain provides an additional planning detail. Hiking trails starting in Bitschwiller-Lès-Thann also make mountain hikes possible on both sides of the Thur Valley and lead to remarkable viewpoints. When choosing, you can therefore weigh up a clearly defined circular trail against longer hikes with viewpoints.
Landscape and nature
On the Massif du Rossberg, the high-altitude pastures offer views over the Thur and Doller valleys. The massif is accessible on foot all year round. The Vogelsteine are at an altitude of 1,165 m, are of volcanic origin, and are home to delicate rock flora. Here, views over the valleys meet a distinctive geological formation and sensitive plant life. The Massif du Rossberg has a restaurant on site as well as catering options for groups. If you are planning a meal, check in advance what will be available on the day of your visit.
The Ferme du Thannerhubel is at an altitude of 1,030 m, overlooks the Thur Valley, and offers a panorama of the Massif du Grand Ballon. The “Entre les alignements de pierres” hike passes by the Ferme-Auberge du Thannerhubel. It takes about one hour and 15 minutes and includes 165 m of ascent. Its duration and elevation gain give you concrete reference points when including this hike in your plans.
Church and music
The church in Bitschwiller-Lès-Thann brings together several aspects of the town’s history. Construction began in 1838; the church building dates from 1839 and is dedicated to Saint Alphonse. The church is known for its Callinet organs, which can be heard at concerts in August. As the concert program may vary, it is worth checking the current dates before planning to attend a particular concert.
Industrial history and remembrance
Industrial history also shapes the town: the steam whistle known as the “Dampf’pfifla” was invented in Bitschwiller-Lès-Thann. In 1836, the town was known for manufacturing locomotives. Route Joffre connects Bitschwiller-Lès-Thann with Masevaux and was built in 1915 to supply French troops on the front line. The Berthold memorial is another historical landmark. It commemorates a resident of Bitschwiller-Lès-Thann who took part in clearing mines left over from the Second World War.
The town’s events history also includes a specific date: during the third edition of “Noël au Village,” a Christmas market featuring stalls full of handcrafted creations took place on 7 and 8 December 2024.
