Memorial with Panoramic Views

At the top of the hill above Sigolsheim is the Nécropole Nationale de Sigolsheim, a French-American military cemetery. It can be visited free of charge year-round, without a guide. From the hill, the 360-degree view takes in the vineyards, the Alsatian plain and the Black Forest in Germany. The memorial site and the view bring together two distinct aspects of a visit to Sigolsheim hill.

Winemaking and Trails

Sigolsheim is a wine-growing village. Its wine-growing areas include the three Grand Cru terroirs of Mambourg, Marckrain and Furstentum. GewĂĽrztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris are grown in these areas, with a small amount of Muscat also produced. The names refer to different things: Mambourg, Marckrain and Furstentum designate terroirs, while the varietal names refer to the grapes grown. This makes it easy to distinguish the local vineyard sites from the range of grape varieties.

The gastronomic hike passes through the village, the surrounding vineyards and Mambourg hill. It covers a route of 8 km and includes six food stops. The tour therefore combines a specific route length and several tasting stops with a route through the village and wine-growing landscape. Dates and booking conditions vary by season; check the details for your chosen edition before planning the hike. In addition to the 8 km, you can also allow time for the hike’s six food stops when planning your visit.

The mountain bike circuit passes through the three Grand Cru terroirs and offers the opportunity to stop at the necropolis on Sigolsheim hill. The starting point is Rue St Jaques at Espace Pluriel. The two activities have different focuses: the hike highlights the food stops and the 8 km route, while the circuit features the three terroirs and the option of stopping at the memorial site. You can experience the vineyards and landscape on foot, with food stops, or by mountain bike, with the option of visiting the memorial site.

Church and Chapel

Two religious buildings also provide cultural and historical points of interest in the village. The Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul is on the Route Romane d’Alsace. It replaced an older church in the 1190s and was classified as a historic monument by decree dated October 1, 1841. The Sainte-Anne Chapel is late Gothic, was mentioned in 1328 and was listed as a historic monument by decree dated May 6, 1938. Today, it serves as a cemetery chapel.

The dates refer to different aspects: the 1190s relate to the earlier church building, and 1841 to the church’s classification; 1328 is a mention of the chapel, and 1938 its listing. This distinguishes construction history, mention and heritage status, rather than treating all the dates as construction dates.
