Discover Rouffach from two perspectives: among Renaissance lanes and historic buildings on the one hand, and above the town on a route offering sweeping southern views on the other. The Réserve naturelle des Collines de Rouffach nature reserve adds a characteristic dry grassland landscape to the town’s setting. Culture and nature are not a fixed itinerary, but different ways to shape your experiences.
Dry Grassland and Views
The Réserve naturelle des Collines de Rouffach is predominantly characterized by dry grassland that was once grazed. It includes the largest continuous area of Xerobrometum in Alsace. The diversity recorded there also sets the protected area apart: among 274 plant species, 38 are endangered in Alsace; the fauna comprises 468 species. These inventory figures may be updated as monitoring continues.
The Promenade des Grand Cru Vorbourg offers a different perspective on the landscape. It climbs above Rouffach and opens up sweeping views south across the surrounding countryside. The route also leads to a viewing balcony above Rouffach, from which you can see the town and, in particular, its historic medieval landmarks. This lets you shift your gaze from the dry grassland landscape to the town and its buildings.
Buildings and Town History
The Tour des Sorcières is the only surviving tower in Rouffach and is attached to the former town hall. This fortified structure is classified as a historic monument. Its floor plan changes between two clearly distinct shapes: it is round at the bottom and square at the top. The building brings together both its former defensive function and a striking change in architectural form.
Notre-Dame de l’Assomption is a church in the Romanesque-Gothic style. Its architecture illustrates the development of religious architecture from the 11th to the 19th century. Its notable architectural features include a sculpted portal and the rose window above it. Together with the fortified tower, the church offers another way to explore Rouffach’s architectural history.
The Rouffach Bailiwick Museum presents treasures from Haut-Mundat. Rouffach was once its capital; the museum also displays objects from villages that formerly belonged to this bailiwick. It is located on the first floor of a former 16th-century granary, which was designated a historic monument in 1921. Here, the history of the former bailiwick meets the changing uses of a historic building.
Walks, Puzzles, and Events
The historic town walk focuses on Rouffach’s history; an information leaflet is available from the tourist office. Free guided tours are offered in summer. Group tours are available by advance reservation. Since tour arrangements may change, check the dates before your visit.
The “Balade ludique à Rouffach” leads through the Renaissance lanes, turning questions and clues into part of a puzzle. It is available in three versions for children aged 4 to 12 and for the whole family. The formats are clearly different: the historic walk focuses on the town’s history, while the puzzle trail is about discovering the town together and solving the challenges.
Every year, the Fête de la Sorcière transforms Rouffach into an open-air theater featuring local traditions, events, performances, costumes, and social gatherings. The program varies from year to year; check the event dates if you would like to plan your stay around it.
Markets and Getting There
The markets also offer different highlights. The Organic Market is an open-air market with local and organic products such as bread, cheese, fruit, vegetables, and meat. The weekly market offers regional produce and prepared foods, including bread, cheese, fruit, vegetables, and meat. While the Organic Market description emphasizes organic products, the weekly market also offers prepared foods. Market details may change; check the latest information before your visit.
