In Biesheim, Gallo-Roman history meets activities on the Giessen. The Musée gallo-romain organizes its permanent exhibition into four themed areas. It covers Gallo-Roman civilization and the military presence at Oedenbourg. The collections relate to a large Gallo-Roman settlement north of the municipality, at the site of the vanished medieval village of the same name.

Cultural History and Programme

Guided tours of the Musée gallo-romain are offered in French and German. If you would like to plan a guided tour, check the dates before your trip. The Médiathèque in Biesheim offers exhibitions, concerts, conferences, workshops and films. As the programme may change, it is also worth checking the latest event dates here.

Activities in the Forest and on the Giessen

The fitness trail runs for almost three kilometres through the municipal forest and includes 20 obstacles. A botanical trail follows its route and introduces visitors to different tree species. In this way, exercise on the trail is combined with a botanical perspective on the forest.

The pump track offers another way to be active: it is intended for sports and recreational use with BMX bikes, roller skates, skateboards and scooters. The facility is located on a former industrial site that has been restored to nature, near the Giessen. When choosing between the options, both the activity and its location provide a guide: the municipal forest and obstacles on the fitness trail, and wheeled equipment on the pump track.

Cycling Routes and Waterside Landscape

Biesheim’s cycling network covers 20 kilometres and connects Kunheim, Volgelsheim, Neuf-Brisach and other villages. It includes a section of the Véloroute Rhin, a European route. This is a different scale from the almost three-kilometre fitness trail: its length describes a single trail, while the 20 kilometres refer to the cycling network. Those weighing up different ways to be active can thus distinguish between a named trail and routes connecting several places.

Visitors can take a 45-minute ride on the Giessen in a flat-bottomed boat with a boatman. The boat departs from the former abattoir at Rue du Stade, 68600 Biesheim. Seasonal operations and departure arrangements may vary, so check the sailing dates and departure point in advance. The banks of the Giessen are lined with reeds and small stands of willow and poplar, providing habitat for numerous bird species. The boat ride and the riverside landscape offer different reasons to explore the Giessen, without implying any particular order for a visit.

The marina on Île du Rhin lies between the Rhine and the Canal d’Alsace. It has 220 berths and accepts enquiries about stopovers. If you are considering a stopover, ask about availability before your trip.

Market and Seasonal Offers

Biesheim’s weekly market, held on Wednesdays, resumed on 6 May 2026. Stalls offer seasonal fruit and vegetables, cheese, artisan bread and local meat from short supply chains. Market dates and vendors may change, so check before your visit whether the market is taking place and what is on offer.

Whether your trip focuses on the museum, cycling, the Giessen or the weekly market, the options mentioned differ considerably in subject and timing. A quick check in advance is particularly useful for cultural events, boat trips and the market; for cycling and forest activities, the stated route distances offer a practical guide.
