Bergholtz can be explored from several perspectives: Baroque architecture, local history, and paths through vineyards, forest and village. The network of three discovery trails includes 14 information panels; the walks lead through the village as well as through vineyards and forest. Their different themes can help you choose: would you rather explore cultural heritage, discover winegrowing or plan a nature walk? If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Bergholtz, the local themes can serve as a starting point for planning your trip.
Baroque Architecture and Historic Sites
The Church of Saint Gall features Baroque architecture. Its octagonal, onion-shaped bell tower is one of its distinctive features, along with its richly decorated Baroque interiors. The church was built between 1759 and 1764 to replace the older church. The tower and interiors offer different aspects of Baroque design.
The Motte castrale adds a different historical dimension to the story of church architecture. It is the surviving remains of a castle that served as a lookout post on the borders of the territory of Murbach Abbey. It is located at 32 rue de l'Eglise in Bergholtz. By decree of 15 November 1985, the Motte was listed as a historic monument. While Saint Gall represents Baroque church architecture, the Motte points to the former border function within the abbey’s territory.
Another historical detail concerns the Canal Vauban: it was built in 1699 and followed the route of an old road to Rouffach.
Discovery Trails to Suit Your Interests
The Sentier village explores the rich cultural heritage of Bergholtz, a commune with a history spanning more than 1,300 years. The Sentier vignoble focuses on winegrowing and discovering the terroirs of the Spiegel Grand Cru. The Sentier forĂŞt is a nature walk in the shade of fir trees and passes the quarries of Bergholtz. The trails therefore differ in their focus: local history, winegrowing, or nature with forest and quarries.
Another route, the Les carrières de Bergholtz et Bergholtz-Zell circuit, alternates between vineyards and forest and is suitable for children. If you are travelling with children, it offers a separate option alongside the three themed discovery trails.
Winegrowing at the Spiegel Grand Cru
The Spiegel Grand Cru extends across the municipal territories of Guebwiller and Bergholtz. Its east-facing slopes lie at an altitude of 260 to 315 metres. This 18.26-hectare terroir, on its southern slope, favours the cultivation of Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Muscat. This gives the winegrowing focus of the Sentier vignoble a specific connection to a named terroir and its grape varieties.
Practical Information
The LES VOIES DU PATRIMOINE app is available for the discovery trails, with an audio guide in French, German and English. As the app’s availability may change and the route infrastructure may require local maintenance, it is advisable to check the app and trail conditions before your visit.
