Saints Peter and Paul Church in the town center, historical landmarks and a landscape with views over the valley offer different starting points for planning a trip to Hagenthal-le-Bas. You can focus on architectural and cultural history, or include the viewpoints, stream and surrounding trails.
Church, Chapel and Historical Landmarks
Saints Peter and Paul Church is in the town center and is shared by Hagenthal-le-Bas and Hagenthal-le-Haut. It is therefore a point of reference for both towns. Another religious building is the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Cross. It was built in 1842 or 1844 on the site of a former wayside cross and was a popular pilgrimage destination in the 19th century.
Jewish heritage is also part of the municipality’s historical landscape. The protected Jewish cemetery, Cimetière israélite, is located in Im Gucker. By decree of November 4, 1992, it was added to the register of historic monuments. Protected movable cultural heritage also includes standing statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul from the 19th century.
The former château of the Eptingen family features a square section with three floors above a basement level, dating from the 16th or 17th century. It also has a bay window with tracery windows. A preserved building on Rue de la Synagogue bears visible traces of the almemor and the Torah niche. Together with the cemetery, these traces form distinct material evidence of Jewish history in Hagenthal-le-Bas. While the church and chapel reflect religious uses, the former château is notable for its building layout and architectural details.
Viewpoints, Stream and Landscape
The terrain offers numerous viewpoints from the village over the surrounding semi-open agricultural landscape. Most views are oriented toward the valley. When exploring the area, you can take in both individual viewpoints and the character of the landscape: the land is predominantly agricultural, and the valley provides a recurring direction for the views.
The Lertzbach rises within the municipality and flows through Hagenthal-le-Bas from west to east. Together with the stream, its well-developed riverside woodland is considered one of the municipality’s most important ecological areas. The stream and its riverside woodland thus form a specific ecological focus, while the viewpoints look out over the agricultural surroundings and their valley orientation.
Discovery Trails and Cycling Loops
Hagenthal-le-Bas is in the central zone of the Porte du Sundgau discovery trail network. This zone also includes Le balcon du Sundgau, an 11 km trail. As route details may change, it is advisable to check local information before setting out.
Another walking option is the Hagenthal–Neuwiller hike. It passes through a former seigneury and a border bottleneck that is one kilometer wide at its narrowest point.
There are also local options for cycling: five cycling loops have starting points in Hagenthal-le-Bas, among other places. Check the current route markings before setting off.
