Wangenbourg-Engenthal combines historic sights with hiking trails through forests and rocky landscapes, and also offers a dedicated cycling area at Lang Parc. When planning your visit, you can focus on cultural and historical sites, a longer challenging hike, or trails with views of Wangenbourg and its hamlets.

Castles and historic sites

Château de Wangenbourg was first mentioned in the 13th century. Its ruins were classified as a French historic monument by decree on December 6, 1898. The keep is 24 meters high, and from its summit the view stretches over the extensive surrounding forests. History and woodland scenery together shape the character of this place.

Château du Freudeneck is also near Wangenbourg, on a ridge of Schlossberg at an elevation of 390 meters, above the Mossig River. Its ruins can be reached from Château de Wangenbourg via a signposted forest trail. A road takes visitors traveling by vehicle close to the site; from there, it is a five-minute walk to the ruins. Access is free and open year-round. Check access conditions before your visit.

The Chapelle d’Obersteigen is also located within Wangenbourg-Engenthal. It was classified as a historic monument in 1844.

Hiking through forests, hamlets, and rocky landscapes

The Circuit des Rochers starts at the Mossig et Vignoble Tourist Office. This challenging hike is 17.7 kilometers long, takes about six hours, and involves 569 meters of elevation gain. It follows forest trails along the Mossig to the hamlet of Windsbourg and passes distinctive rock formations and geological features of the region. Check the latest route information before setting out.

The Circuit Panorama Sud offers a different experience, with striking views of Wangenbourg and its hamlets and a route through shady forest and clearings. The two hikes therefore have different planning considerations: for the Circuit des Rochers, distance, approximate duration, and elevation gain are concrete factors; for the Panorama Sud, the views and landscape define the route.

Cycling and events

Lang Parc de Wangenbourg offers an area dedicated entirely to cycling. It includes a pump track, downhill runs, jumps, and features for all levels from age two. This cycling-focused offering complements the destination’s hiking trails and historic sites.

The Médiévales de Wangenbourg-Engenthal take place every two years on the last weekend of August. The program includes drumming, workshops, and storytelling. Since dates and programs may change, check both before traveling.
