Schirmeck brings together different historical periods with specific hiking and cycling routes. When choosing accommodation, start by asking yourself: Would you like to explore historical topics, plan a longer hike, or choose a cycling route starting in Schirmeck? The building history ranges from the early 13th-century castle to the 1909 synagogue and the “Kommandatur” building from 1943. For the routes, distance, difficulty rating, starting point, and route each provide different points of reference.

Castle, Synagogue, and a Historic Memorial Site

The Schirmeck synagogue was built in 1909 to plans by Strasbourg architects D. Falk and E. Wolf. Schirmeck Castle was built in the early 13th century and destroyed by the Swedes in 1633 during the Thirty Years’ War. The two buildings point to widely separated periods in the town’s history: the medieval castle and the early 20th-century synagogue.

Another historical reference is the “Kommandatur” building of the former Schirmeck-Vorbrück internment camp. It was built in 1943 and is still located on Rue du Souvenir. The building is privately owned. Together, the castle, synagogue, and Kommandatur represent different historical themes and periods.

Hiking: Route Profile, Starting Point, and Views

The D09 circular hiking trail is 19 km long, follows the GR 5, and leads to Donon. It is rated “Expert” and starts at Schirmeck train station. Its distance, rating, and starting point give you concrete information to help you factor this longer hike into your plans.

Stage 09 of the Traversée du Massif des Vosges offers another option. It starts at Schirmeck town hall and is certified as a “Leading Quality Trails - Best of Europe.” The two routes have different starting points in town: D09 starts at the train station, while Stage 09 starts at the town hall. The certification is a special distinction for this stage.

The C05 hiking trail focuses on a historical connection and views of the town: it leads to the site of the former Schirmeck Castle fortifications and offers panoramic views of Schirmeck. The hiking routes therefore have different features: D09 is described in terms of its distance, rating, and destination, while C05 combines a named historical site with a viewpoint.

Cycling: Returning to Schirmeck or Heading Toward Fouday

Cycling route C22 starts in Schirmeck, crosses the Climontaine valley, and returns to Schirmeck along the Bruche cycle path. C13 follows a different direction: it leaves Schirmeck via the cycle path toward Fouday. The route passes through forest and mountain scenery and offers panoramic views.

This distinction is useful for planning your day: C22 is explicitly described as returning to Schirmeck, while C13 is described as heading toward Fouday. You can therefore choose a cycling route based on whether you prefer one that returns to its starting point or the described route toward Fouday. No connection between the two cycling routes is implied.

This way, planning starts with what you would like to do, rather than combining all the routes into a fixed itinerary.
