La Vancelle brings together mountain scenery, walking trails and traces of history. The village lies on the southern slope of the mountain range that separates the Val d’Argent and the Val de Villé. Its sunny location is naturally sheltered from northerly winds by the Massif du Chalmont to the west and the Altenberg to the east. Visitors considering La Vancelle as a destination will find a range of things to explore: viewpoints and rock formations, trails to suit different time budgets, and a history dating back to 774.

Mountain scenery and views

The Massif du Chalmont towers above La Vancelle, reaching 704 metres. At its summit, a rocky viewpoint offers a view across the entire Lièpvrette valley. The massif is characterised by huge, rugged sandstone boulders. Local legends are also associated with the landscape, including the treasure of Charlemagne, the White Lady and the Pont des Fées. Rock formations and storytelling traditions are both part of the character of this mountain range.

East of La Vancelle lies the Altenberg, which reaches an elevation of 855 metres. Together with Chalmont, it forms another prominent landmark in the area. A hiking trail starts at the Massif du Chalmont. Chalmont is about a 45-minute walk from the car park by the church; local trail conditions may affect the journey time. The rocky viewpoint at the summit and the view into the Lièpvrette valley provide a clear destination for this hike.

Walks and hiking plans

The Circuit du Heyrisheck is a short walking trail starting in La Vancelle. If you are looking for a shorter walk, you can compare it with the footpath to Chalmont, which is listed as taking about 45 minutes from the church car park. The information relates to different destinations and starting points, but helps you gauge the time required for each option. For a longer outing, a hiking trail also starts at the Massif du Chalmont.

Another circular trail to the Rocher du Coucou and Château du Frankenbourg starts at the car park at La Vancelle town hall. The route offers views of the Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines valley, the Alsace plain and the Val de Villé. Château du Frankenbourg is located within the municipality of Neubois. Access to the path leading to the castle entrance and the platform of the keep is closed to the public until further notice under a municipal order dated 30 April 2025. Do not plan on accessing these areas as a member of the public.

Local history and architecture

The first documentary mention of La Vancelle dates to 774. In a charter of Charlemagne, the village is referred to as “Bobolino Cella”. Église Saint-Louis dates from the 19th century. Around 1830, stones from part of the Mur païen were used to build the church. This brings together an early written reference, a 19th-century church and the reuse of older stones in one place.

The mill house at Hurst also offers a specific architectural point of interest: it probably dates from the 18th century and is privately owned. The carved wooden balcony was added in the 19th century. Visitors interested in architectural history can thus compare it with the church as another building in La Vancelle, dating from a different period. The house’s private status should be kept in mind.

Park and local cuisine

There is a park in the centre of the village with children’s play equipment and picnic areas. As municipal facilities may change, it is advisable to check the current situation before visiting. The facilities make the park a practical place to stop in the village, without requiring you to spend any particular length of time there.

Auberge Frankenbourg in La Vancelle serves French cuisine with innovative, cosmopolitan touches, as well as dishes made with fresh produce. Menus and service arrangements may change; check the current offering before visiting. Along with the walking trails, mountain scenery and historic buildings, this makes it possible to plan a stay around your own interests.
