Drachenbronn-Birlenbach combines nature-themed attractions with traces of local history. The Chemin des Cimes Alsace leads above the treetops to an observation tower, while the Jardin du Presbytère in Birlenbach brings together different garden areas and a replica of a château. During your stay, you can choose between outdoor trails and discoveries related to gardens and history.
Treetop walk, adventure, and mill route
The Chemin des Cimes Alsace is a 1,050-metre-long path above the treetops that leads to the top of a 29-metre-high observation tower. A free car park is available in Drachenbronn next to the 7 Fontaines swimming pool for visitors. A free shuttle takes visitors from the Chemin des Cimes Alsace car park to the entrance to the path.
The attractions in the Forêt d’Aventure are made from natural materials and designed so parents can play with their children. This shared experience in nature complements the longer route above the treetops.
The circular trail around the Moulin des Sept Fontaines offers a different perspective. It follows a stream that once fed seven mills. These were shut down in 1924 after water collection facilities had been developed for the municipality. On the return route, a wide track passes through an oak forest where some trees are several centuries old. Water, the mills’ former use, and the old trees give different sections of the route their character.
Gardens and history in Birlenbach and Drachenbronn
The Jardin du Presbytère in Birlenbach comprises three areas: a garden with biblical or Christianized plants, a medicinal plant garden connected to Birlenbach’s history in the 17th century, and a grandmother’s garden with old ornamental plant varieties. The garden also contains a 1:15-scale replica of the château and garden of Catharinenburg. The Jardin has been open to visitors since 2020.
The Moulin des 7 Fontaines in Drachenbronn dates from 1772. In Birlenbach, a gravestone in the Protestant church also bears witness to local history: its partly illegible German inscription mentions the death of Jean Georges de Dahn in childhood in 1575. The gravestone has been protected as an object under French heritage law since 14 September 1998.
Historical details also include the murals “Terre d’Alsace” and “La Forêt enchantée” in the Drachenbronn-Birlenbach elementary school. The murals, together with the wall supporting them, were partially listed as a Monument historique by decree dated 5 September 1996. The elementary school at 8 rue Louis-Philippe-Kamm dates from 1955.
When looking for a hotel in Drachenbronn-Birlenbach, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: the route above the treetops, the trail along the stream, or the gardens and local history. This lets you plan around your interests without combining the different nature and cultural themes into a single route.
