Dieffenthal lies between vineyards and mountains on the Alsace Wine Route. Above the Alsace wine-growing region, the village offers views across the Alsace plain. Hiking trails to rock formations and castles, as well as a cycling route almost 140 kilometres long, offer different ways to explore the landscape and its history.

Rocky Landscape and History

The Sentier des Roches is an isolated rocky area in the middle of the vineyards. Its granite blocks are known as Dambach two-mica granite. The Rocher des Celtes is a hollowed-out rock with a bowl-shaped depression and is associated with Celtic legends. Geological features and a local storytelling tradition thus stand side by side as different aspects of the landscape.

The Church of Saint-Michel also tells of several phases of construction: it was built in the 18th century on the site of an older place of worship and extended at the beginning of the 19th century. Its portal has a surround entirely decorated with volutes. Volutes are spiral-shaped ornamental forms; here, they shape the frame of the portal.

Every winter, the Schieweschlauje, the throwing of burning discs, takes place at the Rocher des Celtes. The tradition usually falls on the eve of the first Sunday of Lent. If you want to plan your visit around it, check the event date in advance; it may shift with the liturgical calendar.

Hiking and Exploring Along the Way

The Sentier des Roches starts in front of the church in Dieffenthal. The route is estimated to take two hours and is considered suitable for all ability levels. There is also a short 45-minute loop marked with a blue ring and a longer loop marked in yellow. The two time estimates can help you plan a shorter or longer walk. As markings and route information may change, check the trail markers before setting out.

An easy hike leads from Dieffenthal to Ortenbourg, built in the 13th century. Along the Sentier des Murailles et des Vignes, stones, low walls and fortification walls line the route; castles and winegrowers’ houses are also among the historic features along the way. The hiking options thus differ in focus: the route to Ortenbourg centres on a named castle destination, while the Sentier des Murailles et des Vignes highlights historic traces along the route.

“Les mystères du vignoble: Dieffenthal” is designed as a family treasure hunt. Clues are scattered along the way, combining the journey with a search. If you want to include this activity in your plans, check in advance whether it is available during your visit; the clues’ organisation may change.

Cycling and Accessibility

From Dieffenthal, you can cycle along the Alsace Vineyard Cycling Route between vineyards and villages. The route is almost 140 kilometres long. This makes it a different option from the short local hikes: cycling and the links between vineyards and villages are the focus here.

Dieffenthal is accessible via a road or route suitable for buses.
