Ihamaniemi brings together monastery history, a choice of trail length and a water route to suit different travel interests. The Enonkoski Monastery Community, the nature trail and Joutenvesi each offer a distinct focus; the village hall adds local history. You can tailor your choices to your interests: religious and cultural sites, a nature trail with two length options, or activities on the water.
Monastery and Chapel
The Enonkoski Monastery Community—Finland’s first Evangelical Lutheran monastery—was founded in 1994 in Ihamaniemi’s former village school. If you are interested in how religious communities came into being, this provides a clear historical point of reference.
The monastery welcomes visitors, guests and overnight guests for short or longer stays, individually or in groups. Booking conditions may vary; check the relevant terms when planning a stay. Volunteers can also take part in seasonal outdoor work around the monastery and in the building. This means that, in addition to visiting, you can also get involved through seasonal volunteer work.
Masses and devotions are held in the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, which also hosts musical events. Religious services and music offer different reasons to visit the chapel. If you are planning to attend a specific musical event, check its date.
Nature Trail and Water Route
The Ihamaniemi Nature Trail is 3.3 km long and has a 2.4 km shortcut. The shorter option reduces the distance by 0.9 km. This makes it easy to choose the extent of your walk: you can plan for either the full length or the shorter option. Both figures refer to the same nature trail.
Joutenvesi offers a different focus. Known for its beauty, it provides a suitable boating or kayaking route between Ihamaniemi and Oravi. The water route complements the nature trail with a different way to get around. If you would like to include boating or kayaking in your trip, check local water conditions and available services separately before planning an excursion.
Village History and Event
Ihamaniemi Village Hall is associated with the Ihamaniemi Agricultural Society, whose history spans more than 100 years. A photo exhibition and a self-service library at the village hall present local history. The focus here is on photographs and a library visitors can use independently, while the monastery community and nature trail reveal other aspects of the area.
At the event at Ihamaniemi Village Hall, lunch is served from 11 a.m. on both days. The café is open during the event and offers seasonal specialties; local products are also available for purchase. Lunch and the café are part of the event programme. If you are planning around these, time your visit to coincide with the event dates.
