Enonkoski combines local history, religious heritage and nature around Kolovesi. When choosing a hotel, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on: cultural attractions in town, scenery and paddling, or a visit at a particular time of year. Whether a specific festival should shape your stay may also be important when planning.
Museum, granaries and local history
The Enonkoski Museum is located in the town centre, in an old granary built in 1880. Its exhibition explores the town’s livelihoods and displays products and tools from the glassworks on Kangassaari. The building and exhibits offer different points of interest: the granary reflects the history of construction, while the glassworks products and tools focus on a specific aspect of the town.
The local heritage museum includes a former granary from the 1880s and a former clothing and women’s-chamber granary from the 1890s. Both stand in the church village beside the church. Their dates show the difference in age between the granary buildings. The single-arch stone bridge in Enonkoski is also in the church village; it was built in 1903 or 1904.
Monastery and sawmill heritage
Enonkoski Monastery is located in Ihamaniemi. It is Finland’s only Evangelical Lutheran monastery and the centre of the Enonkoski Lutheran monastic community. This adds a religious heritage, clearly connected with the Lutheran monastic community, to the themes of architectural and local history.
The remains of the Enonkoski sawmill are also of regional significance. This is due to their historical, architectural and landscape values. Their significance is therefore not limited to industrial history: architectural history and the landscape also matter when considering the sawmill remains.
Kolovesi: scenery, paddling and rock art
Kolovesi National Park is located in Enonkoski and is considered a paddler’s paradise. Towering rocky cliffs rising from Lake Saimaa shape the park’s landscape. Enonkoski also borders Lake Saimaa; rugged rocky landscapes and pristine forests are also part of the area’s scenery. A rock painting at Ukonvuori in the national park is about 5,000 years old. Thus, the Kolovesi experience combines scenery and paddling with a very ancient cultural-historical connection.
Getting around the church village and seasonal conditions
Koloveden Luontotupa is located in the church village. Its exhibition covers the nature of Kolovesi National Park. It also offers hiking, travel and service advice, particularly information on getting around the Kolovesi area, as well as maps. The exhibition and advice have different focuses: the former on the park’s nature, the latter on finding your way around. The Luontotupa’s summer café serves fresh coffee and light snacks.
One seasonal restriction is important to bear in mind: hiking and camping in Kolovesi National Park are only possible in summer. Kesäkohinat opens the summer season in the municipality of Enonkoski. A large fish market is held in Enonkoski every summer; Joulukuhinat takes place around Christmas. Dates vary. If a festival is a key factor in deciding when to travel, check the specific date before making plans.
