The post-Ice Age surface of Saimaanharju is shaped by kettle holes, with ancient shorelines on the slopes. These are two distinct traces in the landscape: kettle holes shape the terrain, while the shorelines mark former shores. The landforms and evidence of past shoreline locations thus offer different aspects of the landscape. A lean-to shelter is located in a ridge landscape near Saimaanharju School and the library, with views of Lake Suurlampi. It can be reached on foot, on skis or by bicycle. In winter, conditions may affect access.

Settlement history and exhibitions

The Kirkonkylä–Saimaanharju route tells the story of Taipalsaari’s settlement history. Its historical arc spans Stone Age lakeshore sites, Iron Age refuges and the present day. A key period was the establishment of a church, administrative and transport centre in the 16th century. The account thus encompasses both early traces of settlement and the later development of central functions; it is not limited to a single period. Meeting place and events

Kohtaamispaikka Luoto is a meeting place in Saimaanharju maintained by the municipality of Taipalsaari. Its programme includes weekly and monthly gatherings, groups, themed events, club activities and other events. While the route explores settlement history and the library hosts exhibitions, Luoto focuses on meeting people and a variety of event formats. Beach and water facilities

Konstu Beach in Saimaanharju has a jetty, changing rooms and a toilet. Check whether these facilities are available before you arrive. The beach is accessible by car and also offers a good landing place for paddlers. Saimaanharju also has a boat harbour with a boat launch ramp. To find the right facilities for your activity, note that the landing place for paddlers is at Konstu Beach, while the boat launch ramp is at the boat harbour. A boat launch ramp is a slope used to launch boats.
