If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Säimen, the local highlights can help you choose a theme: mill history and its technical collection, or nature trails and their respective terrain requirements.

Mill history on the Säimen River

The Säimen Mill is classified as a cultural heritage site of regional significance. A mill has stood at the site since 1880; the current building dates from 1937 and operated until 1960. This brings together the long history of the site and the period of operation of the present building. The Säimen Mill Museum is located at this mill site.

The local history exhibitions include objects related to log driving, forestry and household work. The largest part of the wooden mill machinery, as well as the tools used in mill work, is also on display. Technical exhibits thus sit alongside themes from everyday life and work in the forest and home, offering different perspectives on local history.

The museum grounds include a smoke sauna, a forge with tools and a stable building. Exhibits there relate to horses and their use, as well as crafts and agriculture. These buildings and themes complement the focus on mill technology with other aspects of working and everyday life.

The river’s role is also part of the area’s history: the Säimen River runs alongside the mill and supplied power for mill operations and for the electricity-generating generator. In 1978, the Savonranta Association leased the mill complex from the municipality for use as a museum. This followed the operating period of the present building, which ended in 1960.

Nature trails: terrain and routes

The Timon Taival nature trail runs through varied forest landscapes and past beautiful rock formations. The Timon Taival trail crosses rocky terrain with small climbs and steep steps, and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. In some sections, the route is difficult to follow; blue spray-painted markings and ribbons indicate the way. Conditions may be more challenging when wet.

There is a well-equipped barbecue shelter on the Timon Taival hiking trail, suitable for grilling sausages. The trail starts at the end of Koivulantie. If you hike it in the opposite direction, you can park your car at the Säimen Mill Museum. Check access and parking details again before your trip.

The Niemen Kierto nature trail is about three kilometres long and follows the shore of Lake Kangasjärvi for an extended stretch. Its uneven, root-covered surface also makes the trail unsuitable for people with reduced mobility; it may be more slippery when wet. Orange trail markers indicate the route. Trail conditions may vary by season; if conditions change, check the markings on site.

The trails’ differing features can help you choose between them: Timon Taival is characterised by rocky terrain, steps and sections where the route is difficult to follow. Niemen Kierto, by contrast, features a root-covered surface and a longer stretch along the lakeshore.
