An English landscape park, a brick church and a forest trail with a shelter offer visitors to Kärkölä different experiences. Huovila Park combines garden history and nature, while the Hiidenmäki forest trail offers insights into forests and landforms. Those interested in architecture will find another distinctive destination in Kärkölä Church. A canoe route on the Teuronjoki also offers opportunities to enjoy nature.

Huovila Park: Garden Landscape and Local Heritage Museum

The more than three-hectare Huovila Park is located in the church village of Kärkölä, in a wooded stream valley. It is considered a unique English landscape park in Finland and has been restored to its early 20th-century state. This carefully designed setting brings together garden history and a diverse range of plant life: many rare plants have been planted there and also grow wild.

Kärkölä's local heritage museum, maintained by Kärkölä-seura, is located in the park. In the museum courtyard, there is a café open in summer, with an information point and light refreshments. As it operates seasonally, it's a good idea to check before your visit. The park and museum offer different points of interest: the landscape and local history are both central to the experience.

Church and Preserved Buildings

Kärkölä Church is a brick church designed by L. I. Lindqvist. It was built from 1887 to 1889 and inaugurated on Michaelmas Day in 1889. For visitors interested in architectural history, it offers a clear contrast to the garden architecture of Huovila Park: here, the focus is on a single church building, while Huovila is an extensive, landscaped setting.

Notable buildings have also been preserved on Hiidenmäki: an architecturally distinctive stable hand's quarters, a brick sauna and a herdsman's building. These structures add further types of buildings to Kärkölä's architectural attractions.

Hiidenmäki: Forest Trail and Views

The Hiidenmäki forest trail starts in Huovila Park and leads into an area of scenic value that is part of the Salpausselkä ridge formation. Eight information boards along the trail provide information about the forests and landforms. A shelter on Hiidenmäki has space to eat food you've brought along, and offers views towards Kärkölä Church.

The park and forest trail offer different experiences: at Huovila Park, the restored English landscape style, rare plants and local heritage museum shape the visit. On Hiidenmäki, the focus is on the forest, landforms and the information along the trail. If you plan to visit both, you can choose based on whether you're more interested in a designed park landscape or in interpreting nature and the surrounding landscape.

Guided Walks and Canoe Route

Kärkölä's sports services offer groups guided nature and activity walks in Huovila Park. The two-hour group activity can be held from spring through autumn when there is no frost. As details of the activity may change, it's a good idea to check dates in advance.

The more than 40-kilometre canoe route on the Teuronjoki offers another way to experience the area's nature. It runs from Lammi to Hausjärvi and lies mostly within the Hämeenkoski and Kärkölä areas. The route is quite different from a visit to the park or forest trail: it's a longer water route, while Huovila and Hiidenmäki offer nature experiences on land.

Getting There and Planning Your Visit

Kärkölä can also be visited by train and makes a good day trip, with attractions combining nature and culture. Check current train connections before setting off. It helps to choose a focus when planning your visit: the park and museum combine landscape with local history, the church is an architectural landmark, and the Hiidenmäki trail adds forests and landforms to the experience. For guided group walks and the seasonal café, check the relevant dates and opening hours in advance.
