Haapavesi offers a variety of options for a stay: historic vicarage culture, museums and music sit alongside birdwatching and outdoor trails. To plan your visit, you can first consider whether you would rather explore cultural history, observe nature or get active outdoors. Specific points of reference include a nature trail that takes about 30 to 60 minutes to walk around, and the various facilities at the Lumimaa recreation area.

Vicarage Culture and Museums

Paakkila is an old vicarage in Haapavesi, built in 1787. The building and its surroundings are part of a historically significant vicarage culture. The garden and cookery school are also part of this history: both began operating in 1893 and were the first of their kind in Finland. The garden has a waterfront park and a shoreline path and is open to visitors at all times. Check visitor access before you arrive.

The Haapavesi School Museum is housed in the building of Northern Finland’s first rural primary school. The Myyrilä Museum collection ranges from long skis from Haapavesi and kantele instruments from Pasi Jääskeläinen’s workshop to a 1950s kitchen. Also on display are medical instruments belonging to municipal doctor Viranko, Onnela’s room and a room devoted to wartime history. The presentation of individual items may change.

Built in 1751, the Haapavesi bell tower is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the region and is closely connected with the history of the Haapavesi church. Another trace of the region’s past is Rapin karjamaja: the cattle hut represents a disappearing agricultural culture. It is one of the best-preserved of Haapavesi’s approximately 200 cattle huts and one of the culturally and historically significant sites in Pohjois-Pohjanmaa. The skier statue commemorates Haapavesi’s tradition of skiers and ski makers.

Nature and Trails

Ainalin lintujärvi is one of Finland’s most important bird lakes. Rare bird species can also be observed there during the spring and autumn migrations. These two migration periods are the key seasonal times for birdwatching. Korkattivuori rises to 186.6 metres above sea level; the nature trail is marked with blue ribbons. Walking the loop takes about 30 to 60 minutes. The elevation refers to the mountain, and the time estimate to the walk around it.

At Haralampi, a maintained boardwalk runs around the pond. The Huikarin Bird Tower stands on the shore of Kirkkojärvi; a beach and a boat launch are nearby. Kylpyläsaari, separately, has a child-friendly beach. These places offer different experiences: a path by a pond, an observation tower by a lakeshore or a day at the beach.

Music and Outdoor Activities

The Haapavesi Folk Music Festival features folk music, world music, classical music, jazz and pop. The specific mix varies from one edition to the next. The festival therefore offers a broad musical spectrum rather than focusing on just one genre.

Lumimaa is a family-friendly recreation area close to the town centre. Its facilities include a sledding hill and an illuminated cross-country ski trail about three kilometres long. Summer activities include running steps, an obstacle course and fitness equipment. This distinguishes the winter offerings from the summer activities without assuming any particular snow conditions.

The Lumimaa mountain bike trail is suitable for all age groups and includes bermed turns, rock drops, dirt mounds, slalom rings, a wooden ramp, jumps, downhill steps, climbing obstacles and a rest area. Individual trail features may change when it is redesigned. A cross-country trail in Lumimaa is 280 metres long. For comparison, this distance can be set alongside the approximately three-kilometre illuminated ski trail; the two figures refer to different facilities.
