Pommern is a four-masted barque preserved in its original condition and is open from May 1 to September 30. Access is via a gangway; tickets are available at the Ă…land Maritime Museum. The ship gives your visit to Mariehamn a distinct maritime focus, which you can combine with a museum visit.
The Åland Maritime Museum is open year-round and was once named Finland’s best museum. When planning your visit, note the difference between Pommern’s seasonal opening period and the museum’s opening hours: the ship is open from May 1 to September 30, while the museum is open year-round. Check opening hours before your trip.
Maritime culture in two museums
The Cultural History Museum of Åland and the Åland Art Museum are housed in the same building; both are open year-round. Their shared address brings two museums together under one roof, so you can plan to visit them as a single destination. Here too, it’s a good idea to check opening hours before you set off.
Guided tours in Sjökvarteret explore the history and maritime culture of the district. Dates and availability may change, so check the latest information in advance. The schooner Albanus is also moored at the district’s quay. Its berth may change.
Paths between the harbour and the coast
The Esplanaden offers a way to walk across Mariehamn from the Western Harbour to the Eastern Harbour: a footpath runs down the middle of the lime-tree avenue. There are additional paths along both coasts, some running directly beside the water. From the western shore, you can watch ferries entering and leaving the harbour. Several jetties are located on the eastern shore. This gives you the option of walking between the harbours or along individual stretches of waterfront.
Three bathing spots lie on Mariehamn’s eastern shore: Lilla Holmen, Gröna Udden and Nabben. Nabben is just outside the centre. Its shore includes a wetland and constructed wooden boardwalks, bringing a bathing spot and a distinct landscape area together. Facilities and conditions at the bathing spots may vary.
People walk and play Frisbee golf in Badhusparken. A path leads past Badhuspaviljongen to Badhusberget, where you can look out over the sea and harbour. This adds a named viewpoint to the coastal paths. The Mariehamn Runt route alternates between footpaths, paved roads and trails; it is hilly in places and includes stairs and wooden ramps. If you’re considering this route, you can take its varied surfaces and terrain into account when planning.
A broader view of Ă…land
On the wider Åland travel destination, the main-island section of the Åland Archipelago Trail runs from Prästö in Sund in the north to Lumparland in the south. Prästö has a nature trail with historical sights. This is a different scale from the paths in Mariehamn: here, the focus is a route across the main island, while the Esplanaden and coastal paths provide access to individual paths and sections of the city.
