Tonge is in the Ba Highlands, about 19 km from Ba Town. This approximate distance gives you a sense of the village’s location. Oral histories, traditional affiliations, and a biographical connection to rugby offer different perspectives. If you choose a destination partly for its historical and cultural context, these connections provide a concrete point of reference for Tonge.

Oral history in Toge Village

An oral account retold in 2019 tells of Adi Lewaseni Mudrelagi. About 150 years ago, she was pursued by tribal rivals, and the people of Toge Village gave her refuge. In stories passed down by the Navatusila, the Tui Naloto at the time, Ratu Viliame Rasaku Lagavakatini, is named as the person who took in Adi Lewaseni and her two sons. According to the account, he decreed that the family of the late Taukei Duguivalu should live in Toge Village. The story links a personal escape with a decision about where a family would live: refuge, welcome, and the designated settlement all form part of its account.

Traditional affiliations and rugby

A 2018 description characterizes Toge as a chiefly village inhabited by the Yavusa Neikoro and Tina. A traditional leadership relationship recorded in 2019 places Toge within the domain of the Vanua o Tabuatolu. Its head is Tui Naloto Ratu Jone Naqiri Lagavakatini; the domain also includes Toge, Balevuto, and Nadrugu. Together, these details identify both the Yavusa named as living in the village and its broader traditional affiliation.

Rugby is also part of a biographical connection: Joji Nasova returned to local rugby competition in Toge. A Fiji Rugby Union profile dated September 19, 2025, reports on this connection. While the account of Adi Lewaseni tells of refuge and a family being taken in, Nasova’s biography points to local competition. These historical and sports-cultural connections sit alongside one another without describing the same aspect of the village.

Connections in the wider travel region

A 2019 report describes a traditional ceremony held in Ba on a Thursday, where Adi Lewaseni’s descendants commemorated the refuge she received. Ba is the location of the ceremony; in the story, Toge is where she was given refuge. These two place references distinguish the setting of the commemoration from the village in the oral account.

Another regional point of reference is Naloto District School in Ba. A report from June 2025 mentions a new water supply system worth US$3,726.15 that was commissioned at the school. The report names students and members of the large farming community in Toge and the Ba Town hinterland as beneficiaries of access to clean water and sanitation. The location reference has two parts: the school is in Ba, while Toge and the Ba Town hinterland are listed in connection with the named beneficiaries.
