Macas can be explored through several distinct themes: the museum at the Centro de Interpretación Natural y Cultural de Macas Pedro Noguera has five themed rooms, the Catedral Santuario has a clearly dated construction history, and from Mirador El Quilamo you can see the Cordillera del Kutukú and settlements near the city. At Parque Recreacional Jorge Rivadeneira, you can watch birds; there are also children's play equipment and food in the park's central area. This gives you a choice of distinct focuses: culture, scenery and leisure.

Museum and cathedral: different ways to explore history

The museum's five rooms cover the history of Macas, tourism, customs, traditions, trade and worldviews. The topics therefore range from the local past to cultural, social and economic perspectives. You can explore Macas not only through individual historical dates, but also through traditions and other subjects covered by the center. For current visitor access, contact the Centro de Interpretación Natural y Cultural de Macas Pedro Noguera directly.

Construction of the present-day Catedral Santuario began in 1980. It was handed over on August 5, 1992; in 1993, it was named Catedral Santuario Nacional Purísima de Macas. The start of construction, the handover and the later naming are three distinct historical steps. This sequence helps keep the dates separate rather than combining them into a single founding date. The cathedral thus provides a specific reference point for Macas's more recent architectural history.

Views of mountains and settlements

From Mirador El Quilamo, you can see the Cordillera del Kutukú and settlements near the city. The view therefore takes in both the mountains and the surrounding inhabited area; unlike the museum and cathedral, the focus here is on the landscape. The viewpoint offers a distinct highlight for anyone who wants to consider the scenery as well as cultural topics when choosing what to see. The mountains and nearby settlements are two separate elements of the view described here.

Birdwatching and other park amenities

Visitors can watch birds at Parque Recreacional Jorge Rivadeneira, which also has children's play equipment. Food is available in the center of the park. Thus, nature watching, play equipment and food are identified as distinct aspects of a park visit. If you include the park in your plans, note that food is available in the central area.

An older history in the wider travel area

An older ecclesiastical history can be found in the wider travel area: in 1591, the first church was built in a natural area near the settlement of Sevilla de Oro, east of the Upano Valley. Sevilla de Oro was the former name of present-day Macas. This historical information relates to the wider area and the former settlement; it should be distinguished from the construction history of the present-day Catedral Santuario. Its location east of the Upano Valley is part of this historical natural area and is not an additional location detail for the present-day cathedral.
