Sangay National Park also extends across Morona Santiago Province and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its range of ecosystems extends from glaciers and volcanoes to cloud forests, Amazon rainforest, wetlands and lakes, as well as fragile páramos and highland grasslands. The park provides a habitat for threatened species such as mountain tapirs and spectacled bears. At Laguna Kakaram, you can observe forests, lush vegetation and numerous birds, mammals and reptiles. Morona Santiago is therefore a place to experience both vast landscapes and individual natural sites.

Waterfalls and their different features

At Cascadas de Evenecer, an approximately 20-minute walk leads to the first waterfall, which is 30 meters high. From there, another 25-minute walk takes you to the larger waterfall, which is 90 meters high. Admission is free; a guide is required. The two walking sections and different heights give you specific guidance for this waterfall visit.

Cascada YungallĂ consists of two waterfalls surrounded by lush vegetation. It is also used for canyoning: participants rappel down or descend between rocks and waterways. So, in addition to the trail to the Evenecer waterfalls, you can consider a different activity at another cascade.

River landscapes, views and activities

The Upano River runs through Morona Canton for approximately 97 kilometers and is between 500 meters and one kilometer wide. It is suitable for white-water rafting, kayaking and tubing. On weekends and public holidays, it is also a gathering place for residents and visitors; local events, artistic performances and sports competitions take place there. If you’re planning your trip around a specific event, check the dates in advance, as the program may change.

From Mirador Alto Upano, you can see Sangay Volcano, its surroundings and the Upano River. Mountains, rivers and Amazon rainforest are also among the landscapes visible from there. The viewpoint offers a different perspective from the activities on the river: here, the visible landscapes take center stage.

Natural sites and regional cuisine

The Ambusha River is a natural site with clear water, surrounded by nature and offering opportunities to relax with family and friends. There are traditional Shuar huts by the river; traditional cuisine is available to order. Typical Amazonian dishes from the Morona region include ayampaco, chicha de chonta and caldo de novios. This lets you experience nature and regional food culture as distinct aspects of a stay in Morona Santiago.

Macas: Pilgrimage traditions and getting there

Celebrations take place each year on February 18, August 5 and November 20 at the Santuario Nacional PurĂsima de Macas. During these celebrations, worshippers walk or make pilgrimages to the cathedral. The sanctuary also houses a six-meter-high white statue of Christ. These recurring dates reflect the religious calendar; the statue is another specific feature of the site.

Macas can be reached by air via Edmundo Carvajal Airport, with flights from Quito, or by road from Cuenca, Riobamba or Puyo. The journey from Cuenca is estimated to take approximately five hours. Routes and schedules can change, so check connections before your trip.
