Vinces combines a distinctive urban riverfront with cultural and natural attractions in the surrounding area. In the city itself, the river of the same name, the Malecón and a replica of the Eiffel Tower offer different points of interest; beyond the city limits, cultural history and the Abras de Mantequilla wetland come into focus. If you are weighing up the city, river landscape and nature watching, this distinction between locations can help you identify the destination’s highlights.

River landscape and landmarks

Vinces lies on the banks of the river of the same name. During the summer season, an extensive beach forms on both riverbanks at Vinces. If you are primarily looking for this seasonal riverside experience, the summer season is an important factor in your travel plans. Vinces is known as “París Chiquito” and is considered one of Ecuador’s most important freshwater bathing destinations. The bathing destination character and the formation of the beach both draw attention to the water, but describe different things: one defines the character of the town, while the other is tied to a particular season. The city is also home to a replica of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It adds a distinctive architectural feature to the riverside attractions and references its Parisian original.

The Malecón by day and night

Vinces’s Malecón is one of the town’s main tourist attractions and draws locals and visitors during the day, but especially at night. This offers a concrete point of reference for planning your visit: the daytime is also part of the experience, but the greater emphasis is on nighttime.

Culture and nature in the surrounding area

The Museo Histórico Cultural Los Chonos is dedicated to preserving the history, archaeology and traditions of the Vinces canton and Los Ríos Province. Its focus therefore extends beyond the city, connecting the canton’s history with the broader provincial perspective. The museum offers a different thematic focus from the riverfront and landmarks in the city.

Abras de Mantequilla is 10 kilometres from the urban area of Vinces. According to the city, the wetland is designated the world’s 1,023rd wetland under the Ramsar Convention and Ecuador’s fourth most important wetland. Visitors can observe 127 bird species there; the municipal account also lists more than 20 aquatic species that can be observed there. While the museum foregrounds cultural history and traditions, Abras de Mantequilla draws attention to bird and aquatic species.

Distances and when to travel

The city gives the distance from Vinces as 100 kilometres to Guayaquil and 56 kilometres to Babahoyo. Babahoyo is therefore the closer of the two destinations mentioned; Guayaquil is farther away. The Guayaquil–Vinces Regatta may also be a factor in planning your trip: the city describes it as taking place annually in March. If you would like to plan your trip around the Regatta, check the dates for the relevant edition. The March date for the Regatta and the summer season for beach formation are two different indications of when to travel.
