Quevedo can be explored through several distinct cultural themes: the striking letters on the Malecón, archaeological collections with different focuses, and the Ronda de Confraternidad Quevedeña. For a culture-focused stay, these offer different perspectives on the city: urban landmarks, museum collections and a cultural event can each be considered as separate themes when planning your trip.

A distinctive urban landmark on the Malecón

On Quevedo’s Malecón, large, brightly colored letters spelling the city’s name, “Quevedo,” stand opposite the Palacio de Cristal. A municipal report from 2016 lists them as a visitor attraction. Before visiting, check whether the letters are currently on display. The feature connects the name Quevedo with a specific place; the archaeological collections, by contrast, turn the focus to pre-Columbian cultures.

Archaeology and memory at Centro Cultural Marco Cortés

The archaeological museum at Centro Cultural Marco Cortés houses pieces from various pre-Columbian cultures, particularly the Milagro-Quevedo culture, also called Las Tolas. The two names refer here to the same culture, not to two separate collection groups. This focus gives the museum a clear cultural point of reference, while the center’s other offerings incorporate further forms of local representation and remembrance.

A mural by artist David Moscoso depicts traditional scenes. Its motifs include the Río Quevedo, raft and cocoa production, and the area’s natural landscape. Archaeological objects and an artistic representation thus sit side by side at the center: the museum is devoted to various pre-Columbian cultures, while the mural brings the river, production and landscape together in a single scene.

A documentation room at Centro Cultural Marco Cortés displays photographs and original archives on the founding of important institutions. This adds institutional history to the archaeological perspective. The cultural center also includes a chapel dedicated to Cristo Redentor. The museum, mural, documentation room and chapel make the center a place encompassing different cultural themes, rather than limiting the focus to a single collection.

Other archaeological collections

The Museo Municipal de Quevedo offers another way to explore the city’s archaeology. A municipal notice dated March 11, 2020, lists more than 670 archaeological pieces on display, registered with the Ministerio de Patrimonio Cultural. It names La Tolita, Jama Coaque, Manteña, Bahía, Daule Tejar, Huancavilca, Pansaleo and Chorrera among the cultures represented. If the current collection size is important for your plans, check the latest figure.

Milagro-Quevedo is given particular prominence at Centro Cultural Marco Cortés, while the notice about the Museo Municipal lists a broad range of other cultural names. These different emphases make it easier to see the collections as more than interchangeable repetitions: one museum has a clearly named cultural focus, while the other’s list offers a broad view of various archaeological cultures.

Cultural event and trip planning

The Ronda de Confraternidad Quevedeña is a cultural event featuring folkloric groups, regionally influenced dance and music, floats and other traditional performances. Modern dance groups, comparsas and delegations from other countries were also planned for one announced edition. A resolution from 2015 provided for it to be held annually; nevertheless, check the specific event date when planning your trip.

The Ronda offers a different cultural experience from the museum collections: here, dance, music and floats take center stage, while the collections feature archaeological objects, murals and documents. If an event is a deciding factor for your stay, plan around the confirmed date. For a more collection-focused exploration of Quevedo, the two archaeological collections offer different starting points.
