In Grønhøj, the history of the potato Germans can be explored alongside memorial sites; heathland trails and natural areas add a distinct landscape perspective to the cultural theme. Grønhøj Kro and its exhibitions are a focal point of local history. For hikers, information about trails on Kongenshus Hede and through Rabisdal offers further specific points of reference.
Grønhøj and the Potato Germans
Grønhøj was founded in the 1760s by potato Germans who wanted to grow potatoes on the Jutland heath. The German colonists in the Alheden settlement succeeded in growing them; they sold potatoes at the market in Viborg and were therefore called potato Germans. Around 1770, the settlement was called Frederikshøj. Its farms were almost identical in layout and stood along three straight, parallel streets.
A notable testament to local history is Grønhøj Kro, a listed, royally licensed inn dating from 1848. The Morten Korchmuseet was established in the Kro’s stable buildings in 2013. The museum includes, among other things, items donated by the Morten Korch family. The “Kartoffeltyskerladen” exhibition features a reconstructed barn from 1760, associated with the German colonists. In this way, local history and the exhibition themes take up the settlement and potato cultivation.
Memorial Sites and Landscape
The “Lancaster R5679” exhibition includes a memorial room for seven crew members. Their aircraft crashed near Grønhøj in 1942. A memorial stone for the crew stands beside the carriage house. These two memorial sites provide a distinct focus alongside the history of the settlement.
The landscape of the Rabis area is characterized by open areas of dry grassland, meadows and heath, as well as a ravine along the stream. It was acquired to create a heathland or dry-grassland corridor between the heathland at Kongenshus and the natural areas south of Rabis Bæk. The route description for the Fløjgårde dal section between Grønhøj and Fallesgårdevej also describes a specific landscape: the trail runs along the edge of a flat heathland plain.
