Sødring Strand lies on the Kattegat coast in Randers Fjord Nature Park. The coastal landscape, walking routes and local history offer different focal points for planning your trip. Sødringholm Skov covers 405 hectares. East of the forest are protected coastal meadows with a marsh-like character and branching tidal creeks. The landscape thus ranges from forest and dunes to flat coastal areas.
Coast, Coastal Meadows and Forest
The coastal meadows near Sødringholm cover a total of 38 hectares and were protected in 1978. The coastal marine area near Sødringholm is also part of the Sødring Wildlife Reserve. A glacially deposited rocky reef lies off the coast at Sødringholm Skov. Boelssten is located about one kilometre from the coast.
A walk in the Sødring nature area takes you through forest, dunes and coastal meadows. Another specific option is the route from Sødring Church to the artificial forest lake and back: it is about four kilometres long, and there are good paths along the way.
Walks and Distinctive Natural Features
One striking natural feature is Kærlighedshuset. There, three small beech trees form a shared canopy just a few metres above the ground. This unusual tree formation adds a single, easily recognisable destination to the expansive landscapes for anyone interested in distinctive natural features while out walking.
Birdlife at Randers Fjord
The coastal meadow at Sødringholm, together with the shallow waters towards Randers Fjord, provides a habitat for birds. Among the birds that nest in the coastal meadows are shelducks, lapwings, redshanks, avocets, skylarks and meadow pipits. Both the protected landscape and its birdlife are therefore at the heart of a nature-focused stay.
Seals can be seen all year round, especially near the mouth of Randers Fjord. There is one specific restriction to bear in mind when planning a visit to the large bird protection area: at the outlet of Randers Fjord, access to the area is not permitted from 1 April to 15 July, during the breeding season. This closure applies to access to this bird protection area and should be taken into account when planning your visit.
Sødring Church and Local Culture
Sødring Church and Sødringholm are historically connected as the estate church and manor house. The church lies south of the manor house, close to the sea on the northern side of the mouth of Randers Fjord. It was built in the first half of the 15th century and is a Gothic church with late Gothic alterations and additions. Its architectural history offers a cultural counterpoint to the area's natural attractions.
Galleri Langt Ude also welcomes visitors to Sødring.
Getting to the Sødring Wildlife Reserve
To reach the Sødring Wildlife Reserve, take main road 531 from Randers. The route passes through Øster Tørslev and Råby, first heading north and then east towards Sødring.
When planning your trip, you can first decide whether coastal scenery and walks, birdwatching or church history will be your main focus. The closure at the fjord outlet is particularly relevant if the large bird protection area is part of your plans.
