In Gjerlev, you can choose between two distinct areas of interest: nature in Gjerlev Kær and the architectural and furnishing history of Gjerlev Church. The specific trails, habitat details, and historical objects can help you choose the focus of your stay according to your own interests.

Nature in Gjerlev Kær

The “Sporene i Gjerlev Kær” walking trail is in the eastern part of Gjerlev. A path through Gjerlev Kær runs along the Øster Tørslev Å. On a walk through the marsh, you may be lucky enough to spot herds of deer as well as foxes, hares, and mink.

Gjerlev Kær is a nutrient-rich fen; nutrient-rich fens are among Denmark’s most species-rich plant communities. Plants and rare species found in the fen include Sumpkællingetand, butblomstret siv, glanskapslet siv, kær-trehage, maj-gøgeurt, tormentil, hjertegræs, engblomme, and star. The possibility of spotting wildlife and the named plants offer two different perspectives on this natural area.

Shelter and practical details

The shelter in Gjerlev Kær has three sheltered spaces, as well as an indoor fire pit and a larger fire pit outside. In summer, a toilet is freely accessible; water is available from an outdoor tap at the toilet building. So plan for toilet access as a seasonal option. As facilities may change, check the current situation before your visit.

Church history and furnishings

The tower and porch of Gjerlev Church are believed to have been built around 1400. In the chancel arch is a revealed, lime-painted coat of arms bearing the inscription “Nicolaus Jacobi 1605.” The pulpit is designed in the Rococo style and dates from 1762. This brings together an approximate construction date, a year on the coat of arms, and a specific date for the pulpit; visitors interested in church architecture can compare these different time markers.

Møgelholm and other historical connections

The ruins of Møgelholm can be seen from the yellow trail through Gjerlev Kær. The estate burned down in 1955, was not rebuilt, and the land was divided into plots. A robber stronghold is said to have stood at the site in the 13th century. The site’s history thus includes both a possible medieval interpretation and a specific turning point in the 20th century.

The Nørhald Local History Archive is also housed in the Gjerlev Activity House and focuses on the local history of the area. This adds a dedicated focus on local history to the history of individual buildings and places. The 60.8 km “Fortidsminder mellem fjordene” cycling route lists Gjerlev J as one of its locations. As a cycling route, it differs in activity from the walking trail in the fen; be sure to note the full place name, Gjerlev J.
