Lake Stilling-Solbjerg is 7 kilometres long and covers 366 hectares. Designated fishing areas and a bathing spot add to the lake’s appeal. At the same time, Solbjerg is divided among four parishes whose boundaries existed before the town was established. The lake and the history of its buildings therefore offer two different perspectives on a stay here.
Lake Stilling-Solbjerg and Time by the Water
Fishing from boats or similar watercraft is allowed in designated areas. The zones marked on the official map determine where it is permitted. Before choosing a fishing spot, check the map: permission applies to the designated areas, not to the lake as a whole.
The bathing spot is at Solbjerg Søsport, Søvangsvej 1C. It has a well-maintained lawn with good facilities for spending time there. Access to the bathing spot is from the car park at Solbjerg Søsport.
A communal area in Solbjerg by Lake Stilling-Solbjerg has a path, tables and benches. As the facilities at public areas can change, check their current condition before your visit. The lake is also part of a larger waterway: Aarhus Ă… runs from Lake Solbjerg to Aarhus Bay.
Trails and Time Outdoors
A 2014 outdoor recreation plan published by Aarhus Municipality described walking routes in the lake area for the period from 2013 to 2017. Before going for a walk today, check the local trail conditions. This keeps the historical plan in context while making current conditions part of your planning.
The site at Shelter Solbjerg Skov has a shelter and a fire pit with a permanently installed grill. If you would like to include the site in your travel plans, check availability before arriving. This lets you take the existing facilities into account without assuming a spot will be available.
Parishes and Architectural History
Solbjerg is divided among the parishes of Astrup, Tiset, Tulstrup and Hvilsted. This is because the parish boundaries were already in place before the town was established. This division gives the local history a religious dimension distinct from the lake’s landscape.
Tiset Church has a Romanesque chancel and nave dating from the late 12th century. The tower and porch were built in the Gothic style around 1500. The different parts of the building therefore show a Romanesque core alongside later Gothic additions.
The site of Solbjerg Church was investigated archaeologically. Its Romanesque floor plan had a narrower chancel than nave. This finding draws attention to the ground plan and the relationship between the two main spaces, rather than to later additions to a church tower or porch.
Astrup Church’s distinctive octagonal west tower dates from the Renaissance reconstruction of 1542. Astrup Rectory has been preserved as an architectural gem and stands beside Astrup Church as a worthy neighbour. These examples show different aspects of architectural history: Romanesque floor plans and building elements, Gothic additions and a Renaissance reconstruction.
