Several very different discoveries lie close together in Brøndby Municipality in terms of theme: a historic fortification, medieval churches and an extensive coastal recreation area. There are also signposted routes, cultural events and places where nature and history are brought to life.
History in churches, museums and the open air
The section of Vestvolden that runs through Brøndby is part of a 14.2-kilometre protected fortification. It is historically significant and also has ecological value: the site is important for biodiversity and the environment. Information panels and games at Vestvolden bring the history of the fortification to life. This means you can discover the historic site not only as a structure, but also through its storytelling and interactive elements.
The churches, too, tell stories of different periods of construction. The present-day Brøndbyøster Church was built around 1150 from fieldstone and lime and is one of Denmark’s oldest surviving churches. Brøndbyvester Church is the oldest building in the municipality of Brøndbyvester; its stone church was probably built from chalk stone in the 12th century. In this case, the date is explicitly an estimate.
Middelalderlandsbyen features reconstructed houses from 1350, as well as livestock. Free public events are aimed at families and friends, and their dates vary. For another perspective on local history, visit Forstadsmuseet, which presents Brøndby’s local history in public spaces, including through pop-up exhibitions and guided town tours. The permanent exhibition “Ta' på tur i tiden” can be seen at Kulturhuset Brønden.
Sports history is the focus at the DIF Museum. Sports enthusiasts can relive the stories of athletes and special moments in sports history. Plan your visit in advance: the museum is not open every day, and an appointment must be arranged with the management beforehand.
Between the beach park and signposted routes
The beach park at Brøndby Strand is a seven-kilometre coastal recreation area. White sandy beaches, dunes, lakes, meadows, dry grassland and small wooded areas shape the landscape. A stretch of beach near Gyvelhuse and Strandporten is seasonally awarded the Blue Flag; this award requires an application to be submitted each year.
For an overview on foot or by bicycle, try the four Kløverstier routes in Brøndbyøster. They are around two to 14 kilometres long and start and finish at Kløverstipælen by Brøndbyøster Station. The Vestegnsruten offers a different scale: this 42.195-kilometre route passes through Brøndby Strand, among other places, and can be completed in full or in sections, on foot, by bicycle or running. The information clearly distinguishes between several shorter routes that share a start and finish point and a longer route that can also be used in sections.
Esplanadeparken has walking and cycling paths. Brøndbyskoven offers nature experiences all year round; at Festpladsen, you will find benches, tables, a fire pit, a nature playground and exercise equipment. If you would like to combine a tour with time outdoors, you can include these specific facilities in your plans without needing to follow a fixed route.
Cultural events and experiences for different interests
Kulturhuset Brønden brings exhibitions and a programme of events together. In addition to Forstadsmuseet’s permanent exhibition, it hosts KulturCamp: a free creative winter holiday programme for children and young people from Brøndby. Brøndby Kulturnat is a recurring cultural event held on the first Friday in October. Store Cykeldag is an annual cycling event that includes visits to local attractions and businesses. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular programme, check the dates of the relevant events in advance.
Brøndby Naturskole also combines regular events with opportunities to spend time there independently: it holds three public events every year, and their dates vary. You can visit and use the outdoor areas independently, provided you treat them with care and leave them clean.
At Dyregården Søholt, children and young people learn to feed and care for a wide variety of animals, including reptiles, horses, pigs, chickens, rabbits, birds and goats. Rabbit show-jumping tournaments and other animal competitions are also held there. Another specific activity for children is the nature playground behind Brøndby Stadium, in the heart of Sportsbyen: its obstacle course includes balance activities among the trees, as well as a large pyramid net and trampolines.
Brøndby Harbour is the northernmost marina in Køge Bugt Strandpark. Its location and facilities make it a good starting point for trips to the forest and the beach. If you are interested in public art, “Bykunst i Brøndby” offers free outdoor art experiences.
