Lynge combines an old village centre with a church whose building and furnishings reflect several periods, as well as opportunities for walks through hilly terrain. This gives you different interests to consider when planning your trip: the history of the settlement and church, and the trails in Lynge Gravel Pit. Another route to explore is the Lynge Clover Trail, which goes up the “Bjerget” incline.
Village Layout in the Old Centre
Lynge’s old centre comprises a village setting with old farms, street-front buildings, the church and a village pond. Lynge is also a so-called street-cluster village: old farms and houses stand on both sides of the original streets, which meet in the village. The word “cluster” refers to this spatial arrangement. The character of the village therefore depends not only on the age of individual buildings, but also on their position along the streets that converge there.
Lynge Church and Its Historical Layers
Lynge Church is one of the earliest stone-built churches in Denmark and was built in the early 12th century. Its building and furnishings reflect other, much later periods as well: murals dating from around 1470 have been preserved in the chancel vault, and the tower dates from 1723. The altar, pulpit and pews date from the time of Christian IV.
These features place the building, murals, tower and furnishings in different historical periods. The church can therefore be viewed not only in terms of its early construction: the preserved murals, later tower and furnishings each add their own historical accents. For travellers interested in architectural history, this sequence offers a particularly clear view of different layers of the church’s history.
Walks and Trails
Walks through hilly terrain are possible at Lynge Gravel Pit, where there are good trails. The gravel pit was designated as a test area for converting gravel pits into recreational areas. This earlier designation provides a historical context for the area’s recreational character.
One specific route is the Lynge Clover Trail, which goes up the “Bjerget” incline. The two route references highlight different features: the terrain and walks at Lynge Gravel Pit, and the route over a specific incline on the Clover Trail. This lets you distinguish between a general opportunity for walks through hilly terrain and the described route with its named high point.
Allerød Municipality as the Wider Setting
In the wider travel destination of Allerød Municipality, another point of interest is the centre of Allerød. The Byforum Allerød association works to make this centre vibrant and well-functioning, with active commerce, cultural experiences and social activities. The centre also aims to attract visitors from other towns with its cultural offerings, shops and events, as well as its atmosphere.
This focus concerns the centre of Allerød and should be distinguished from Lynge’s local characteristics. The priorities are different: in Lynge, the old settlement layout, the church and the walking and trail options described above shape a visit; in the centre of Allerød, the focus is on commerce, culture, events and social activities.
