In Bystřička, there is plenty to explore during a stay, from a cultural monument and rock formations to trails by the reservoir. The Klenov Nature Trail focuses on natural features and medieval castle ruins; by the shore, you’ll find a main beach and a rental service for boats and paddleboards. For planning, it’s worth distinguishing between the highlights: the nature trail links several natural and cultural points of interest, while the cycling routes described have different connections to the reservoir.

Dam and Cultural Monument

The Bystřička waterworks are a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. In 2003, they were designated a cultural monument because of their unique architectural and urban design and technical equipment. The dam itself is also historically significant: it is one of the oldest dams in the Czech Republic and the oldest dam in the Morava River basin upstream of its confluence with the Dyje. At Bystřička, therefore, both the design of the structure and the dam’s place in the history of water engineering are in focus.

Klenov: Castle Ruins and Rock Formations

The remains of a medieval castle stand on the rocky summit of Zámčisko on Mount Klenov. Ceramic finds date its existence to the 14th century. The site thus brings together visible traces of the castle and a date established through archaeological finds, although the ruins themselves do not form a complete castle complex.

The Klenov massif includes large, striking sandstone and conglomerate rock formations. Some are thought to be frost cliffs. The described rocky landscape includes a narrow gorge, a small fissure cave and rock ledges. A rock window measures 165 centimetres long and 35 centimetres wide. Those interested in geology will find a variety of landforms and rock types here on a named mountain massif; the interpretation of some formations as frost cliffs remains a possibility.

The Klenov Nature Trail and Its Seasons

The Klenov Nature Trail starts at the Bystřička Reservoir, is seven kilometres long and has ten information panels about the geological, botanical and zoological features of the Javorníky Mountains. Following the blue hiking trail markers, it leads to a viewpoint near the nature reserve below Mount Klenov and then to the rocky summit of Zámčisko. The route also includes a turnoff to the Svantovít Rocks and the Louky pod Štípou natural monument. The panels offer several points of interest along the way, covering not only geology but also plant and animal life.

The activities mentioned vary by season: in summer, the nature trail is suitable for walkers and mountain bikers; in winter, it is also suitable for cross-country skiers. Conditions on the trail can vary, so check them before setting out. This lets you take both the season and your preferred way of getting around into account when planning, without losing sight of the different points along the route.

Cycling Routes and Time by the Water

Two cycling routes with different connections to the reservoir are mentioned. Green cycle route 6119 goes around Bystřička Reservoir and continues to the municipality of Valašská Bystřice. Blue cycle route 6018 leads down to the reservoir. One route therefore goes around the water and continues to a municipality, while the other leads to the reservoir.

The main beach at Bystřička Reservoir is partly grassy and partly sandy, with a gently sloping entrance into the water. There is a boat and paddleboard rental service nearby. As availability may vary by season, check before your visit. The beach surface and rental service are useful details to consider if you’re planning to spend time by the water.

Traditional Crafts

The town’s history also includes an earlier craft tradition: torches, Křivák knives and household wooden vessels were made in Bystřička. The wooden vessels were called “valašský porcelán” (Wallachian porcelain). These products offer a further glimpse into local history, distinct from the waterworks and trails.
