Chomýž lies in the valley of the Rusava stream, below the western slopes of the Hostýnské vrchy. Forests in the Hostýnské vrchy Nature Park stretch east of the village. This landscape setting is complemented by hiking and cycling trails, as well as historic memorials in the village. If you are planning a stay, you can weigh up Chomýž based on your specific interests: would you like to focus on a hike to the castle ruins, a cycling route through the village, or a look at its works of art and monuments?

Hiking and Křídlo Castle Ruins

A blue-marked hiking route runs through Chomýž and takes you to the Křídlo castle ruins. A yellow-marked hiking trail also passes through the village. It is helpful to distinguish between them when choosing a hike: the blue route has a named destination in Křídlo, while the yellow trail is another marked option that passes through Chomýž. If you are looking for a trail with a specific historical destination, the blue route offers a clear connection. Markings may change, so check the current route before setting out.

Near Chomýž, low remains of the palace and defensive walls have been preserved at the Křídlo castle ruins. There are also the foundations of a tower-like gate and a circular masonry cistern. The ruins thus combine a hiking destination with a specific interest in surviving castle architecture.

Cycling through Chomýž

Cyclists can also include Chomýž in their plans. A signposted local cycling route runs through the village, as does regional cycling route 5033. It runs from Kroměříž to Hustopeče nad Bečvou and is 55 kilometres long in total. The local cycling route and route 5033 offer different scales: one runs through Chomýž as a local, signposted route; the other is a regional connection between the stated endpoints. The 55 kilometres refers to the entire route. Markings and alignments may change, so check both before your ride.

Historical traces in the village

The first written mention of Chomýž dates from 1365. A group of figures depicting Saint Anne, made in 1742, has been preserved. Near the northern edge of the village stands a stone cross dating from 1762. These dates mark different periods: the written mention belongs to the 14th century, while the group of figures and the cross date from the 18th century. If you would like to put the village’s history in context, you can distinguish between the early written reference and the later preserved objects.

Two further memorial sites refer to specific historical events and groups. A monument to the victims of the First World War stands on the village green in Chomýž. In front of the kindergarten building is a monument to the Zelený kádr partisan group. These memorials to the First World War and the partisan group add further cultural and historical themes to the village, alongside the older works of art and the stone cross.
