A Late Baroque church, Gustav Mahler’s birthplace, and trails of varying lengths give Kaliště U Humpolce a distinctive character. The village also hosts events throughout the year and is situated on a high plateau. You can get to know the place through its culture, a hike, or an event date—depending on what you want to focus on during your stay.

High plateau, far-reaching views, and a watershed

Kaliště lies on a high plateau at 601 metres above sea level. From the surrounding area, views extend across Vysočina and Central Bohemia as far as Blaník. Its position within the water system is also notable: the cadastral area of Kaliště forms a watershed between the Želivka and Sázava rivers. The elevation, views, and watershed each tell a different story about the local landscape.

The church and Gustav Mahler

Kostel sv. Jana Křtitele stands in the village square. Its existence has been documented since 1350, when it was already a parish church. The present church was built in the Late Baroque style from 1805 to 1812. Inside is a valuable stone baptismal font dating from the 15th century—making it older than the present church building. The church is also listed as an immovable cultural monument in the ÚSKP.

Another cultural landmark is Gustav Mahler’s birthplace. It has a music hall where concerts and international masterclasses in singing, piano, and the interpretation of contemporary music take place. The programme may change. Visits to the accessible part of the birthplace must be arranged in advance; confirm the arrangements again before you arrive.

Hiking, cycling, and a winter circuit

The Cesta Gustava Mahlera begins in Kaliště u Humpolce and passes through Speřice, across the D1, Lhotice, Lískovice, and Vřesník, before reaching Želiv. It follows a green-marked hiking route and is approximately 15 kilometres long. The distance is a useful guide for planning; keep in mind that trail conditions can change.

Cycle route 1211 also passes through Kaliště, running from Proseč through Kaliště and Holušice towards Speřice and beyond. In winter, the Severozápadní okruh z Humpolce kolem Kališť circuit passes through Kaliště. Its use depends on snow conditions. These routes offer different connections without requiring you to combine them into a single trip.

Events throughout the year

Each autumn, the Jezdecký klub Trio Kaliště equestrian club holds the Hubertova jízda. The day ends with a dance event in the evening. The Sportovní klub Gustava Mahlera Kaliště sports club organises the traditional Kaliště open tennis tournament. Every year, FolKaliště gives up-and-coming musicians a chance to perform—not only young musicians. Exact dates and programmes may vary. If you are planning your trip around an event, confirm the current dates in advance.

From Kaliště, you can reach the FolKaliště festival site via a marked, one-kilometre footpath downhill. Access arrangements may change from one edition to the next, so check the information for the relevant edition. The difference between the approximately 15-kilometre Cesta Gustava Mahlera and this one-kilometre footpath makes it easy to distinguish the two routes by length.

An addition to your dining plans

The restaurant at Mahler Penzion in Kaliště serves classic Czech cuisine and international specialities. The menu may change. The restaurant adds a specific dining option to the village’s cultural and scenic attractions.
