Jaroslavice combines striking architectural history with recurring wine events and a protected waterside habitat. The Church of St. Giles, the castle and the Jaroslavický rybník each represent different interests; popular, relatively easy cycling and wine routes also pass through the town. When choosing a destination, you can therefore focus on culture, event dates, or nature and outdoor activities.
Church and Castle: Distinct Historical Accents
The Church of St. Giles was built from 1788 to 1791 in the Neoclassical style, with three altars and three bells. It was solemnly consecrated and opened on December 9, 1792. The construction and consecration dates mark two successive stages: construction was completed before the solemn consecration and opening followed. The church also features carved pews, a specific detail of its furnishings alongside the clearly dated years of construction.
Jaroslavice Castle offers a different architectural accent. The monumental, single-storey building has four wings arranged around a large rectangular courtyard. In its present extent, it was probably built by Scipione of Arch in the 1560s and 1570s. Unlike the precisely stated construction period of the parish church, the dating of the castle’s present extent remains a likely estimate. Together, the buildings showcase different forms and historical periods.
Wine Events and Recurring Dates
Annual wine events include Otevřené sklepy and Žehnání mladého vína. The local wine association has organized both since 2009. Their names refer to different occasions: open wine cellars and the blessing of young wine. If you want to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the current date for your chosen year before booking.
Another annual tradition is the costume ball with maypole raising, organized by Jaroslavická chasa. It takes place on the first Saturday in September to mark the name day of St. Giles on September 2. The occasion and the event date are not necessarily the same: for planning purposes, the first Saturday in September is the specific date to bear in mind. This makes it easy to plan for the recurring event if it is what determines your travel dates.
By the Water and on the Trails
The Jaroslavický rybník offers two different ways to enjoy the water. It attracts anglers to spend time on its banks and is also protected under Natura 2000 as a natural habitat for a large number of waterbirds. If you are coming to fish, check the local fishing regulations in advance, as they may change. Fishing and bird habitat each offer a distinct focus at the same pond.
There is also a specific option for cyclists: popular, relatively easy cycling and wine routes pass through Jaroslavice. The Quaissova vinařská stezka educational trail has its own point of interest, commemorating the legacy of Leopold Quaisse. There are different themes to choose from: the cycling and wine routes focus on getting active, while the educational trail recalls a specific person. Together with the buildings, recurring events and pond, these offer a range of options to suit the reason for your stay.
