In Wischau, architectural history, a long ceramic tradition and encounters with animals come together. When planning your stay, you can choose different focuses: exhibitions and historic architecture, ZOO PARK Vyškov or a visit to the market. If you prefer to travel by bike, the Srdcem jižní Moravy cycle route also offers a route that extends beyond the local area.

Museum and Ceramic History

The Muzeum Vyškovska is located in Vyškov Castle. Its permanent offering comprises eight permanent exhibitions, complemented by temporary exhibitions. If you are planning your visit around a particular temporary exhibition, check the current programme in advance. This lets you tailor your museum visit to the subject that interests you most.

The museum displays an extensive collection of vyškovské lidové keramiky, or Vyškov folk pottery. It was produced in Vyškov from the early 18th century until 1945. This long period gives the collection a clear local connection: you can view the pottery not only as individual craft objects, but also in the context of a tradition of production carried on over generations.

Renaissance and Earlier Architectural History

The historic buildings represent different periods. Vyškov Castle originated as a Gothic castle in the 15th century and was remodelled between 1665 and 1682. A loggia dating from 1673 stands in the Zámecká zahrada. It has seven arcades with Tuscan columns, and a balustrade adorns the upper section. The repeated architectural elements give the loggia a clearly recognisable structure.

The Chapel of St Anne and the Renesanční radnice also show which details are worth looking at. The chapel is a 16th-century Renaissance building and preserves fragments of wall paintings signed with the date 1584. The Renesanční radnice was built in 1569. Its surviving features include remnants of a Renaissance arcade, Renaissance inlaid doors and 18th-century stucco decoration. Wischau therefore brings together several periods of construction and decoration, and its buildings cannot be reduced to a single era.

Remembrance and Jewish History

The former synagogue is part of the town’s conservation area. During its restoration in 2024, its art-historical value was highlighted in connection with the history of Jews in Moravia. This historical connection adds another perspective on Wischau to the exploration of its Renaissance buildings. The dates are important: it is a former synagogue, and its restoration took place in 2024.

Animal Encounters and Rural Life

ZOO PARK Vyškov focuses primarily on domestic and farm animals from around the world. In the Dvoreček naší babičky area, you can meet domestic animals up close and feed or pet kids, lambs and other animals. This makes for a different experience from a visit focused mainly on architectural history or museum collections.

The themed attractions also include the Hanácký statek, a replica of a farm from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Traditional materials were used in its construction: the roof is made of reeds, and the interior features clay plaster. Period features of the farm and agricultural equipment complete the display. The focus here is therefore not solely on animal husbandry, but also on the materials and furnishings of an earlier rural way of life.

Cycle Route and Market Days

The 60-kilometre Srdcem jižní Moravy cycle route runs from Vyškov to Blansko and connects the Drahanská vrchovina and Moravian Karst regions. Its length and two endpoints provide a concrete starting point for planning your trip; no walking or cycling time is specified. Check the route details before setting off.

The Vyškovské trhy are held at Masarykovo náměstí every other Wednesday. Stalls offer baked goods, cheese, fruit, vegetables and wickerwork. If you plan to visit the market during your stay, check the specific dates before travelling. Planning a market day differs from planning around the 60-kilometre cycle route: for the market, the day of the week matters; for the route, it is the choice of distance.
