Nové Sady combines a long history with a landscape shaped by the Drahanská vrchovina, forests and water. Its former name, dated turning points and the Velká Haná River offer different ways to explore the municipality. If you would like to include cultural history and natural attractions in your travel plans, you can start by looking at the historical milestones, then consider the location and the named landscape features.

History across different periods

The former name Nebštych comes from the German “Neustift” and refers to a newly established settlement. The first written mention of Nové Sady dates from 1426. The name and the year serve different purposes: the name refers to the meaning of the settlement, while 1426 marks its first written mention. Březina is another distinct historical reference within the municipality. This settlement was founded around 1765 as a seigneurial settlement on forest land. These are two different kinds of historical information: the first written mention of Nové Sady and the founding of Březina.

On 7 July 1892, a fire completely destroyed Nové Sady and the settlement of Březina. The date therefore applies to both settlements. Later, during the occupation, Nové Sady was forcibly evacuated: the evacuation took place in 1943, and the settlement was repopulated after the war in 1945. The history of the municipality thus encompasses not only early information about names and settlements, but also much later upheavals.

A specific architectural monument adds to these historical milestones: the bell tower in Nové Sady dates from 1888 and is listed as an immovable cultural monument. The tower offers a different connection to local history than the fire, evacuation and repopulation: here, the focus is on a single structure, while those events involved changes that affected Nové Sady and Březina.

Landscape and location

Nové Sady lies in the Drahanská vrchovina, in the northwestern part of the Vyškov District. The municipality is located at an elevation of 570 metres near a large forested area and is therefore used extensively for recreation. The regional setting, elevation and proximity to the forest describe the area around the municipality; recreational use adds another geographical perspective. Nové Sady can therefore be viewed both through its historical milestones and its location in a landscape of hills and forests.

Water also shapes the geographical setting. The 10.5-kilometre-long Velká Haná watercourse flows through Nové Sady. The protected Velká Haná Natural Monument lies to the west of the municipality. There, meadows and shrub-covered slopes along the river shape the landscape. The name Velká Haná thus appears in two contexts: as a watercourse that flows through the municipality and as the name of the natural monument to the west. For orientation, it is worth considering the river and the natural monument as distinct geographical reference points.

Finding your way around

North of Nové Sady, beside a field track, is an object known as “Boží muka.” Together with the natural monument to the west and the watercourse flowing through the municipality, its location offers another directional reference. These location details give an overview of different points in the surrounding area: one north of the municipality, one to the west and the river running through Nové Sady.

Another named reference point is the Novosadská spojka. A publicly accessible section runs from the junction with Kostelní Street to the boundary of the military area, about 450 metres north of Nové Sady–Březina. Check current access conditions before visiting. The section connects a specifically named junction with an equally clearly identified endpoint, adding a practical route reference to the overview of local history, landscape and location.
