For planning a visit to Chvalkovice, there are several options to focus on: church art and village history sit alongside the wooded summit of Hradisko (Boří) and its archaeological connections. A historic windmill adds to the cultural attractions; the hiking routes described lead from Chvalkovice to Hradisko or start in Chvalkovice u Bučovic, while the KČT cycling route passes through Chvalkovice u Bučovic.

Baroque Church Art in Chvalkovice

The Church of St. Bartholomew is first documented in 1389. It acquired its present form through Baroque renovations around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. A monumental Baroque altar was created shortly after 1760. Its components include the mensa, a tabernacle with an altarpiece, elaborate sculptures and stucco decorations. This makes it possible to consider the furnishings as a focus in their own right, alongside the building’s history: the altar combines several elements in an extensive work.

The church was completely renovated between 2000 and 2012. The renovations around 1700, the creation of the altar after 1760 and the later renovation mark different phases in its history. For visitors interested in architecture and art, the church offers specific points of interest that go beyond its first documented mention.

Windmill and Remembrance of Village History

The brick Dutch-type windmill is located about 500 metres east of the municipality of Chvalkovice. It began grinding grain in 1873; its first miller and builder was Josef Vítek. This places its historic operation in context without implying that it is still operating today. A plague column in Chvalkovice’s village square also commemorates the plague epidemic of 1715. The mill and the column offer historical points of interest distinct from the church: one is a mill with a recorded construction and operating date, the other a monument with an explicitly stated commemorative purpose.

Hradisko: Wooded Summit and Archaeological Connections

Hradisko (Boří) is a wooded summit at an elevation of 518 metres north of Chvalkovice, located within the cadastral areas of Chvalkovice and Nemochovice. The archaeological area has connections to the Aurignacian and the Bell Beaker culture. These two cultural contexts give the site an archaeological dimension distinct from the history of buildings in the village.

A route description published in 2018 mentions a 1.5-kilometre, red-marked hiking trail from Chvalkovice to Hradisko and a tourist shelter with seating at the edge of the forest. Check the route and the shelter’s condition before your visit. A route description updated in April 2026 also lists a 19-kilometre hiking route that starts in Chvalkovice u Bučovic and reaches Hradisko after 2 kilometres. The two descriptions offer different route options: one describes a trail to Hradisko, while the other covers a longer hike with Hradisko as an early point along the way.

Putting the Cycling Route and Hiking Trails in Context

Chvalkovice u Bučovic can also be included as a point along a cycling tour: the 51-kilometre KČT cycling route passes through the village at kilometre 30. The route’s total length and the stated point along it help distinguish this cycling option from the hiking trails. Route details may change; check the current route description before setting out.
