Syrovice can be planned around two different interests: the “4. želešické KOLORÁDO” cycling route leads into the village, while the church and small monuments offer insights into its history. For your trip, you can therefore decide whether cycling or local history should take centre stage. Another consideration when choosing your dates is the traditional August festival on the last weekend of August.

Cycling to Syrovice

The “4. želešické KOLORÁDO” cycling route leads to Syrovice. Its section through the village continues to a pond and is suitable for cyclocross and mountain bikes.

If you are travelling by cyclocross or mountain bike, you can take the stated suitability for these bikes into account when planning. The cycling route gives your stay a clear focus on activities; the village’s history offers a different way to get to know Syrovice. Which aspect you give greater weight to depends on whether you want to devote your trip primarily to cycling or to the historical sites.

Church and local history

The Church of Saint Augustine stands on the eastern slope of Syrovice and offers views of the village. As a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, it also has protected status. Its hillside location, views of the village and architectural history give the building different historical and landscape connections.

The building’s history begins with a chapel erected in 1775 at the initiative of Marie Cecilie ze Sekenberka. It was later extended to form the present-day church. The year therefore refers to the chapel, not to the later extension. This sequence makes the building’s historical development easier to understand: the chapel was built first, followed by the extension that resulted in the present-day church.

Wayside shrine, cross and a historical donation

The smaller monuments also make their own impression. The late Baroque wayside shrine “Poklona” stands on the road towards Bratčice. The “Poklona” wayside shrine is a valuable small monument that points to the design of the early modern cultural landscape. The stone cross “Kamenný kříž” in Syrovice is a valuable late Baroque architectural sculpture on a small scale. The wayside shrine and the cross thus differ both in name and in how they are described.

Another historical connection to Syrovice is the Baroque sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was donated in 1771 by Jiří Šubert of Syrovice. The year and the named donor make this donation a specific historical reference. By contrast, the church’s story focuses on the sequence from chapel to extended church; the wayside shrine is linked to the cultural landscape, while the cross is classified as a small architectural sculpture. These different sites can thus be understood by considering the distinctive features of each.

Season and local connections

The Augustinské hody are traditionally held in Syrovice on the last weekend of August. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check that year’s programme before you travel. The Syrůvka stream also rises in Syrovice, adding a landscape connection to the historical themes. Together, the cycling route, architectural history and monuments classified in different ways offer several approaches to planning a visit according to your interests.
