Heroltice combines a distinctive karst landscape with a local history dating back to the Middle Ages. The village lies above the Svratka Valley, south of Tišnov; the Lažánecko-HeroltickĂ˝ Karst stretches between Heroltice and the BĂlĂ˝ potok valley. For travel planning, accessibility is important: most karst cavities in this area are practically inaccessible.
Karst, Water and Biodiversity
At Na bĂlĂ© near Heroltice, the PejškovskĂ˝ potok resurfaces. The Na BĂlĂ©m spring supplies water to Tišnov and Heroltice and emerges from the rock without freezing. In 1999, the HeroltickĂ˝ potok was reshaped with pools, wetlands and three ponds, creating a local biocentre. Several amphibian species and the freshwater mussel Ĺ keble rybniÄŤná are found there. Alongside the karst, this combination of stream, wetlands and ponds gives the area a focus on water and nature.
Protected plants found in the cadastral area of Heroltice include BramboĹ™Ăk nachovĂ˝, HoĹ™eÄŤek brvitĂ˝ and Okrotice bĂlá, an orchid. Rare animal species in Heroltice include the fire salamander, smooth snake, praying mantis, kingfisher and red-backed shrike. In the biocentre area along the HeroltickĂ˝ potok, birds that can be observed include the mallard, grey heron, reed warbler and kingfisher.
Local History and Places of Remembrance
The first mentions of Heroltice date from 1316. At that time, the knight Herult (Herolt) settled on Horka Hill, where a fortress stood. The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of the village, was built in 1810. A white stone memorial plaque is set in a niche to the right of the chapel entrance. In 1907, the municipality had a statue of St John of Nepomuk erected using a bequest from Tomáš TrtĂlek, who was born in Heroltice.
Places to Visit Nearby
At Šárka lies Ostrov, the former site of the Rudomlýn mill, also known as Puchverk or Stoupa. From 1536, it was used there to crush ore. The site therefore represents a different aspect of the surrounding area from the nature destinations: the historical processing of ore.
The stone-built Studánka U Sovy spring, with an owl statue in a niche, was created in 2008. Near Heroltice, close to Pravková, lies the almost 20-hectare Slunná old-growth forest, consisting mainly of beech forest. Also nearby, a bench at the edge of Obceny forest offers views towards Veverská BĂtýška and Veveřà Castle above it.
Čertova hráz is the remains of a 32-metre-long stone dam in the Pejškovský potok valley. Further along the valley is a rest stop and refreshment area for walkers and cyclists. You can choose between the destinations according to your interests: Slunná for beech forest, the bench at Obceny for the views, and Čertova hráz for a historic structure in the valley.
Events and Planning Your Stay
Every year, Heroltice hosts events including a carnival, a festival welcoming spring, a village feast under the maypole, a summer cinema for children, a kite festival and a lantern procession. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check local dates and programmes before you travel. Your interest in local history, nature or nearby places to visit can help you choose a holiday rental.
