Starov offers clear starting points for a trip combining landscapes, routes and architectural history: three named ponds lie above the settlement, while cycle route 1071 and an uphill excursion route pass through the village. Starov is also home to a rural farmstead listed as a cultural monument. Culture lovers can also visit Volyně, with its town museum in a medieval fortress and the Chapel of the Guardian Angel above the town.
Ponds and Routes
Above the settlement of Starov lie Hradčanský horní, Hradčanský prostřední and Hradčanský dolní. Their names mean upper, middle and lower pond and help distinguish the three bodies of water. The Starov waterway is also part of the Volyňka 2 non-trout fishing area.
Cycle route 1071 connects Starov with Zechovice and Volyně along the same route; the stated sequence of places is Nahořany, Starov, Zechovice and Volyně. An excursion route in the Volyňsko area climbs through Starov towards Nahořany. The routes have distinct characteristics: the cycle route connects several named places, while the excursion route is defined by its uphill course through Starov.
Culture in Starov and Volyně
The rural farmstead at house number 8 in Starov is listed as an immovable cultural monument under ÚSKP registration number 5164. It is a specific point of interest for the village’s rural architectural history. In Volyně, the town museum offers a different cultural focus: it is still housed in the medieval fortress and displays extensive collections from Volyně and the wider Šumava foothills. Its collections therefore span the local area and the wider region.
The Volyně Town Museum is currently open year-round. Nevertheless, check the opening hours and admission conditions before your visit. The Chapel of the Guardian Angel is located above Volyně at an altitude of 528 m. It was built in 1858 to designs by the renowned Volyně architect Josef Niklas. The year of construction, elevation and architect give this building a distinct historical and architectural significance. Comparing the dates of the two buildings reveals different points of reference: the town museum is housed in the medieval fortress, while the Chapel of the Guardian Angel was built in 1858. The chapel thus dates precisely to the 19th century, while the fortress provides the older historical reference as a medieval building.
The cultural sites differ above all in scale: in Starov, the focus is on a single rural farmstead; the museum brings together collections from Volyně and the wider foothills; and the chapel can be understood through its construction date and architect. Whether you are interested in rural architecture, collections or architectural history, these places offer different ways to explore the region.
